So, instead of looking out, why not speak to the manager and voice it out?

because the job is what it is and if the person doesn't like the job they can just get out and let the next better player in?

Just curious, have you had candidates who refuse to be confirmed and instead resigned saying that the job is not suitable? What is your opinion on such people especially if they put the tenure of that job (3mths) on resume?

Yes.

Cannot adapt to changing situations, especially if the job is the same job as what he has been doing for the past 2 to 3 years, with the only difference being the company

If the person has never done this particular job before then i understand.

1) Linkedin
2) Job portals
3) Job advertisements
4) Referrals from other people
5) Attend networking events
6) Call into the company directly
7) Email the person's company email (usually by guesswork)
8) Market mapping

How do you get the info for networking events? Is there a portal for one? How do potential candidates know about those networking events i.e.?

What's market mapping?

Do headhunters/recruiters have quota on number of people to meet daily?

I got an email asking to find out more about the opportunity and during the interview, he said I don't have enough experience. It left me baffled as I didn't understand the purpose of the interview. I felt like he just wanted to make numbers.

Research online.

Market mapping for example. I reach out to one person in dept A. I find out everything about his dept including his bosses, team leads, ex bosses, etc.

Sometimes it involves more than one person. Eg: person A looking for job, I ask him to introduce me to his friends or colleagues in the same line, then do the same for everyone.

Soon I have a good idea who are the people in a specific dept in 3 companies

Well since technically I am a third party personnel.

I always sms or whatsapp. Then email.

Follow up with a specific time to call the person to discuss further

Hi Headhunter,

I would like to ask, have you had any experience hiring for venture capital firms? Any idea what do they actually look for in candidates (associate or managerial level)? From the rare few job ads I see on job portals, they seem to look for those with MC or M&A experience. Do they value candidates with startup experience here in Singapore? ( like in the U.S )

Thanks for the wonderful thread and advice!

Hi HH, need your advice on background check.

Previously was in a startup for about 2 years, while juggling part time studies. Left the job and went on to focus final year uni exams. After exams and few months of holidays (10 months since I left) , I began to find job and realised my old co has closed down. Boss cannot find (emailed, linkedin no reply, phone number not in use anymore), 1 and only colleague number not in used anymore (previously heard she going back philippines). New colleague that replaced me i dono who.

Now i have zero contacts of colleague/boss from this company. How do potential employers verify my experience is true? Very worried about coming across as lying or what

regarding the background check, if i am looking for a new job, the current job i m holding now is my first job, i cannot be possibly putting my boss contact in. so does it looks bad if leave the reference check portion empty?

and by any chance, do u hear of any company that is idiotic enough to call the candidate's current company without any permission given to them?

unless the startup you worked for is majorly funded and you were in the corp dev/corp fi/s&bd role, if not, i doubt so.

dont think M&A exp per se is required, but exceptional modelling skills are.

normally the MC/high finance guys have got these skills in bucketloads, and the proven track record to show for.

dear HH,

I have a fren who kena a operation support role for fx in a foreign bank. its a contract job under recruitment agency. would like to ask if there is any career path or prospect in this job as he totally has no idea about what to expect in the banking finance industry.

he also would like to know how he should do in order to become a perm staff in his bank(other than the usual perform well, work hard, headcount theory). Please advise.

TIA!

No i do not have experience hiring for venture capital firms. Mainly because they are not that big in Singapore compared to other countries and that they typically don't work with HH companies that much.

At very junior levels, they won't bother finding out if your experience is true or not (they take it as a given).

Unless you are like Managerial level and above then they will look into more detail.

1) Yes that is fine. Alternatively you can leave an ex manager contact whom you trust (who has left the company) or a colleague who has left

Honestly, not much prospects in operations, because it is a function which is easily outsourced to other countries (unless you are working in one of the local banks of which you won't be outsourced)

But then, pay increases are not high, demand for people also not high so next time will be harder and harder to look for jobs in other banks.

1) do hiring mgrs screen through resumes? or is it done by HR only?
whats the standard practice?

2) Most GLC require candidates to fill in O level and A level results.....are poor O level and A level results a deal breaker?

Answer is both. Sometimes the manager screen cos the hr not familiar with the role requirements. Sometimes the hr screen if the hr is familiar with the role

As for glc. It really depends on which glc you talking about. Gic and temasek and mas they very strict. Others not related to financial not so strict.

Even which uni you graduate from is important cos a lot of times they don't accept people who never graduate from a Singapore uni. Unless the overseas uni is a top top school

what happens if I was invited for an interview and subsequently told to fill up an application form containing o level and a level results (to be submitted prior to the interview). Will my chances be affected by my mediocre/poor A & O level results?
