Hi guys,

I'm from the IT industry working with one of the MNC giant as a pre sales/sales.
I need some advice here.

1)I've posted my resume on monster.com, jobdb, jobstreet and linkedin, received many response from linkedin and monster. So I'm wondering where else can I post to get better opportunities(IT industries) out there?

2) I'm trying to get into other IT giants. So the question is should I sent my resume to the top head hunter company so as to get decent opportunities? If yes, which are the better head hunter for IT industries that i should approach?

wow suddenly so many IT sexperts here... thought ppl say IT industry bad?

do any of your previous jobs need to be on standby 24/7?

I think IT can still be very rewarding bit it really depends on the industry you are in. As a matter of fact, many non managerial colleagues in my team are paid in the 100k range ex bonus. Those who work more closely with the business are easily >150k. Not boasting... This is quite normal in banking.

Sorry.. Just to clarify.. The folks I mention above started out in banking that's why their salary is so high considering their age and rank.

And applications related role will almost always be paid higher than Infrastructure people. They are assumed to deliver more value since they are closed to business

For desktop roles... Best to support traders.. If your payroll is under that trading business unit that would be better.. Than those shared services one.

I'm doing pre sales, but I don't need to be on stand by. IT industry is not bad, you just need to know where to be. I think pre sales and sales brings good money. With around 4 years of experience I'm getting the higher end of the 4 digits, so its not just in the banking industry you see good money I would say. Try to get into the big IT company, they pay well.

Hi,

May I ask which big IT Companies are you referring to? Cisco, EMC, IBM...Etc?

Does your high end of 4 digit include commission/bonus or just basic salary?

Hi Mr HH,

Just wanted to check on the employment practice. Do I need to pass my pre-employment medical checkup first before signing the contract and confirming a start date?

Hi,

It seemed to me that a lot of companies do not peg the employees to market rate even though they claim that salary evaluation is done. This seemed to cause a lot of loyal ordinary good performing employees to lose out in terms of salary (unless you are a superstar). Whereas those who jumped are always ahead even though they may not possess the experience/skillset that the incumbent has. Is this "unfair" practice normal everywhere?

If you are 'ordinary' and could command better outside, pls do so.

If you are a superstar, naturally you are paid a premium in order to retain you.

Firms have a choice who to reward (keep).

You have a choice to stay or leave (if you could).

If you do not possess the experience/skillset of the incumbent but yet could command more pay elsewhere, who is to blame if you choose to stay behind?

There is nothing unfair. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Hi HH,

There is a 1 year non-competition clause in my contract. How enforceable is it ?

Would have to go to the courts to enforce it if you choose not to comply.

Whether the court will rule in your favor or the firm favor depends on the circumstances. Few factors looked at. Can't remember off the top of my head. It's like if you are a craftsman and the only skill you have is craftsman work. If the firm tries to enforce a non-competition clause barring you to work in a similar trade for 1 year or maybe more. it would unlikely be deemed reasonable and unenforceable. If you can't practice your trade, what do you do? Starve?

To my knowledge, courts had not enforced any non-competition clause yet.

Hi HH,

Just wanna ask if my employment period for different coy is as follows

#1 -2years
#2 - 6 months (left due to different job scope from what was conveyed during interview and JD)
#3 - 1 year (got laid off)
#4 - 2.5 years

Like that consider as job hopper? How do I put it in resume so employers won't brush me off as a job hopper before even asking why did I leave my precious roles?

Job hopper the term is subjective.

First of all, yes you will be considered a job hopper

Secondly, the main thing is, "why did you leave your past companies"

This is critical. For example, if you work and the company go bankrupt, then you will not be faulted for leaving after 3 months

Sorry.. Just to clarify.. The folks I mention above started out in banking that's why their salary is so high considering their age and rank.

It is not because they work in banks therefore their salary is higher.

The nature of the banking industry is that, they have some applications/infrastructure which is unique to financial institutions.

and these command a lot of pay if you are an expert.

Things like T24, Triple A Odyssey, etc

For desktop roles... Best to support traders.. If your payroll is under that trading business unit that would be better.. Than those shared services one.

Yes. Especially if you are an expert in Reuters and Bloomberg troubleshooting, your salary will be quite good.

Hi AAH,

What kind of background check does HR do when hiring a new staff?
