Problem with my new YHT-S401

Having good experience with the YHT-S400, I recently bought the YHT-S401.

I do not really like the S401 design, which is a fingerprint magnet and very scratch prone, but I wanted the ability to decode DTS-HD and Dolby-TrueHD.

Problem number 1
When HDMI control is enabled, you can no longer control the volume via Yamaha's remote or the volume buttons on the subwoofer set. You can only change the volume through the TV's remote. This is not an issue on the previous YHT-S400 system.

Problem number 2
Playing a blu-ray disc on my PlayStation, I tried all settings - audio auto mode for HDMI, selecting all sound formats for HDMI output, bitstream - but only "PCM" and "PLII" lighted up on the subwoofer set. I understand that this means the sound coming out is stereo. However the TV shows DTS-MA track is playing.
Again this is not an issue with YHT-S400. Although YHT-S400 cannot decode DTS-HD, the DTS surround sound signal will light up on the subwoofer set.
Note that I just upgraded my PlayStation firmware, so that should not be the issue.

Problem number 3
I tried a BD-iso and an mkv file on the AC Ryan. Audio out option selected is "passthrough".
- BD-iso track is Dolby-TrueHD.
- mkv track is DTS 5.1.
On YHT-S401 they were both shown as PCM, PLII signals.
Again this is not the case with my YHT-S400. On it, the DTS surround signal will light up instead.

I have photos to better illustrate my point but I do not know how to attach images (The insert image button asks you to insert http link). Let me know your email so that I can post you the lot of pictures I captured.

Using the YSP-2200 in an open living room and not in a small room with 4 enclosed walls near your seating area - any issue or drop in performance?

Thinking of getting the YSP-2200 but I am concerned that I will not be able to enjoy the surround effects (reflection off the walls) since I am in an open living room and I only have the left wall and back wall close to my sofa, the right wall is far away.

Question 1

I'm thinking of getting a Yamaha receiver RX version. Please advise me which RX model best fit my speakers.

My speakers: Pioneer S-81

Speaker System: 7.1 channels
Imepdance: 6 ohms
Maximum Power: 130w each speakers

Question 2

I see Yamaha matching NS-PA210 speakers with RX-V671 in BEST Denki.

RX-V671 has Dynamic Power per channel of 170W for 6 ohms, while NS-PA210 has maximum input power of only 120W for 6 ohms. Won't the amp burns off the speakers?

Thank you very much

Hi Ichua6,

Sorry for the late response.

Answering your Q1, i guessed you are using LX-81 currently. Basing on assumption, close specs model from Yamaha will be RX-A2010 or RX-A3010.

Answering your Q2, NS-PA210 speakers are 6ohms. While all Yamaha receivers can do switching between 6 or 8 ohms to drive NS-PA210.
Even in situation of unmatching impedance for instance, 8ohms amplifier driving the 6ohms speakers, speakers will not blow off. But the amplifier may overheat if you turn the volume up very loud - because it will draw more current than the power supply is designed to deliver.

Hope it clarifies your query.

Cheers! :)

Hi,
Got this problem, hope you could help me out.

My connection (all connection by HDMI);
Starhub HD box > RX-V671 > Panasonic TV, TH-P55ST30.

When I turn-on, audio would not play from RX-V671, instead the audio would be play from the TV.

After I turn-on and off RX-V671, then audio would play from RX-V671.
Any setting/s I miss out?

Thanks for the assistance in advance.

Hi zapmonster,

Apologize for late response.

This is a very difficult to answer question due to different equipment have different HDMI specifications.

My advise:

1. Ensure all HDMI Control or CEC Function is turn on. Check if such situation occurs again. If problem still persist, try turn off all HDMI Control or CEC Function and repeat same steps to see if problem is resolve.

2. If problem is resolved by turning OFF the HDMI Control / CEC Function, then likely the source [Which is Set-Top Box] HDMI is the key issue to it.

Cheers!

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your support in Yamaha products.

In your situation, i would like to see if you had purchased from any Yamaha salesperson for your YHT-S401? Or you purchased from dealers direct?

Please let me know so i know how to further assist your situation as this is not a norm situation.

In HDMI Control feature, there are many possibilities.

PM me if you could.

Thank you.

Dear YamahaSG, if you want to set up a dedicated channel called "Ask Yamaha/FAQ", then please reply promptly. a day's delay in response is acceptable, but not 4 days!

I have already got Yamaha's technician at the service centre to email me the latest firmware - 7.04 - and this resolved my problem. He told me that S401 sets have some problems with Sony TV sets and the latest firmware remedies that. Please get your guys to put it on the web so others who bought the set can download it. The last time I checked, it is still not up.

You should get your technician to contact me when you cannot help me with my problem and not tell me it is not "a norm situation", because it must be a widespread problem for them to come out with a new firmware.

Here's how you can help me now. I have read up on the 401's manual and also did some research, but still a bit confused, so please find out and tell me that if the "PCM" signal is lighted on the receiver, what can that tell us about the audio source that is being received?

When we connect a blu-ray player to the S401, should we select the audio output option to "LPCM" or "bitstream"? "LPCM" means letting the receiver decode and "bitstream" denotes letting the blu-ray player do the decoding of the audio. Am I right? So, which will be the better option for the S401?

Hi Andy,

PCM word lights up on the receiver shows that S401 is receiving PCM Signals. In another words, when receiver shows PCM on S401 means it is not receiving Audio signals like DTS / Dolby Digital / DTS-HD M.A / Dolby TrueHD.

Your BD player should select the option for HDMI Audio Output to Bitstream. This will allows the BD Player to send out HD-Audio signals into the receiver [YHTS401] to decode and achieving the HD-Audio formats available in Blu-ray Disc.

Thanks!

Hi bro,

We do have showroom for different kinds of Yamaha products. But for your kind of products, i am afraid i do not have.

Your kinds sounds like more towards Professional Audio products rather then Home Audio products.

Probably, you can drop by Marina Square, #03-321, to take a look if there's anything that fits in to replace your existing models ya?

Cheers!

Hi Desmondband & u_ntitled,

Currently our YSP-2200 is retailing at $1699 and YHT-S401 is retailing at $1049.

If you would like to have some discount, i suggest you visit our retailers for some in-store prices.

Hi i've purchase ysp 2200..may i know is auto or manual setup recommended?

Thanks

Hi bro,

That depends alot on individual preferences.

For myself, usually i would use auto-setup first and follow by some manual adjusting to my personal preferences.

Hope this helps in your condition.

Cheers!

Yamaha S401 Surround channel output

Noted that the Yamaha S401 has 2 connecters for the back surround channels. Are these powered output?

Also, are there any plans for an updated YSP-2200 with a (radio) tuner?

Hi bro,

Yes the speaker terminals are meant for connecting to 2 additional surround speakers if you wish to.

Standard passive speakers can be use on this terminals but not a Active Speaker.

As for YSP-2200, nope. There isnt any plans for Built-In Tuner.

Would recommend you to use iPod Dock with MeRadio App.

Hope it helps bro.

Cheers!
