Anyone has bought this laptop and used it? I'm about to pull the trigger next week. So any reports would be helpful including where's the best lobang to get the laptop... I'm thinking of scouring Funan.

For me, I'm going for this cos it has the best balance of weight (1.2 kg), speed (SSD), and cost ($999). Any other suggestions are welcome but for the time being I'm quite set on this.

Any good deals? Freebies? All suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

Got mine for 899 during IT fair. Only freebie given was laptop bag. No office, usb drive.

Speed ok for casual use. Cannot run 720p60 youtube videos on chrome. Area above f9 can get hot. SSD very fast. 4gb ram barely sufficient. Battery life is good. Screen clear and sharp. Like the matte finish.

Anyone knows if the current model sold with 4 GB RAM can be upgraded to 8 GB or not?

Anyway I checked up Harvey Norman at Jurong Point... $999 with 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD. Freebies are the wireless mouse, internet security, extra Asus laptop bag (for 16 inch laptops) and one other item I can't remember. The mouse can be swapped for a micro-SD card of 64 GB...

Not very attractive but I guess that's better than nothing... what probably more important is that micro-HDMI to VGA adapter rather than other frills... that bit is pretty expensive...

I wonder if the shops at Funan maybe willing to give a discount or not.

Hello... just to update... I've finally bit the bullet and bought the ASUS UX305FA... 4GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, Obsidian Black (only colour available). $999 no further discounts from Harvey Norman at Jurong Point. Free gifts: Liteon DVD writer, ASUS laptop bag (for 16-inch laptops), McAfee internet security (1-year subscription), wireless mouse (white only). Four items.

Review of free items:
1) Liteon DVD writer. Connects via USB. Plays back DVDs smoothly. Played back a Region 3 'The Three Kingdoms' DVD. Very smooth. Probably due to all USB ports being 3.0 version. Never tested the writing capability. Will test and get back to you. Drive comes with a free version of Nero 12. Not bad. Very useful free gift. By the way, such a drive will cost about $50-60.

2) Wireless mouse. Works but really lousy quality mouse. Retails for $12 at Harvey Norman. Can throw away lar... flimsy, tracking not the latest technology, so doesn't work on magazine paper. Works ok on my tablet rubber cover cos it's textured rubber. Not very smooth. Takes 5 seconds to wake up from sleep.

3) ASUS laptop bag. This is a gift from Harvey Norman. Thin material, single zippers. Only two compartments, the main one with the side pocket. Inside the main compartment, there's a flap for the laptop with a Velcro secure strap. One thin black adjustable strap without the cushion pad.

4) McAfee internet security. This is given by ASUS. In my opinion, it's a useless gift. Prefer the free anti-virus.

Review of laptop:
Build quality is superb. Holding it closed exudes a sense of quality... holding the laptop open by either the screen or the keyboard also makes you feel confident. No creaks, flex or deformation. The laptop is very light but doesn't feel cheap or sub-standard.

Operation. Boots into Windows in less than 10 seconds. Really fast. Does lag bit here and there. But I was installing stuff and updating Windows at the same time. So 4 GB RAM shows its limitations. I was installing Office 2013 full version (not 365), plus Chrome, plus Acrobat Reader, VLC, etc... probably running 3 to 4 installations at the same time... also playing back a movie plus 320 kbps mp3s on Windows Media Player. The laptop was placed on a table with a glass layer on top. So it is a rather poor insulator. The laptop heated up significantly. The bottom was the hottest, not that you can't hold it but you can feel if heat emanating from the bottom. Keyboard was warm but not unpleasantly so. Bottom was unpleasantly hot but still can be handled. The heat issue went away after all the installations were done. When watching full HD video clips, there was no issues. Not much heat at all.

Accessories. Only a USB to LAN adapter was included. Haven't tried it. But it's convenient. Disappointing thing is that there's no micro-HDMI to VGA adapter. But this is considered budget so I guess this is one corner being cut. The laptop comes with a sleeve. Not the neoprene stretchable type but more like cloth type. Not the best quality but looks quite professional. Laptop enters the sleeve from the short end. And really that's all you get.

Screen. Very good quality. Good viewing angles. Good colour. Low reflectivity. No tearing and bleeding so far.

Keyboard. Travel is shallow but there's a firmness to the travel. Need getting used to. I don't usually use laptop keyboards so I can't comment on how good it is since it can't compare to a full sized keyboard. But it's pretty decent to me.

Ports. USB 3.0 all round. That's the best part. I transferred about 800 MB of files... that took seconds. Will try full HD video files and other huge photo files and see how it performs. But my senses is that it's very fast. 3.0 standard.

Haven't tried the other ports yet. Haven't tried battery life yet... Will update this space...

Hopefully you won't ever need ASUS support. Your opinion of them will change very quickly once you do.

I hope so too... but would you care to enumerate your experience with them? What made the experience so poor that you had to post here without any substantiation?

Looks like a good deal if you can also have one year warranty like the local sets? ASUS tends to give international warranty... if so that would be pretty fabulous... US$599 is pretty cheap... for 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD... although I'm not for buying overseas due to potential problems with shipping and taxes... check out the shipping costs and then factor in the GST... 7% is a killer...

Shipping cost should add another $30, 10% insurance, x 1.32 exchange rate x 7% gst = $977 sgd

Still very worth while! Cos I asked at a shop at SLS, the model was for 4 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, the price given was $1498, non-negotiable. So for 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD at $977, that's a steal!!! But I read the website and it says that there are limited numbers as expected. I just hope that whoever is interested in Singapore can get it...

Tested the USB 3.0 transfer speed. Transferred 11.9 GB of files, mainly photos and videos taken on a DSLR from a SUB 3.0 1 TB HDD. The rate was phenomenal, recording about 85 MB/s based on what Win 8 was telling me. It took about a couple minutes or so for the transfer to be effected.

Tested the micro-HDMI output... Win 8 doesn't always play nice with analog conversion. If the projector is SVGA or XGA only, the laptop cannot project via the micro-HDMI-VGA adapter until I switch the resolution down accordingly. Otherwise, project is seamless... thanks to Win 8.

Tried the SD card reader, I was using a UHS-1 rated Sandisk SD card, so transfer was pretty fast.

And with that all the ports have been tested...

Tried Youtube videos. 1080p no issues streaming. but 1080p60 wasn't very smooth. Anyway 1080p was plenty sharp and nice already...

If there are any requests for testing, please let me know, while I still am holding on to the laptop...

EDIT: I just tried the Avengers: Age of Ultron & Fast & Furious 7 1080p60 trailers... they played nice and smooth... so no issues there really... maybe I had poor internet connection the previous night.

One more item to share: the laptop lid opens one-handed... that's super cool in my opinion and should be a feature for all laptops... smooth gliding motion, the bottom doesn't move at all. The laptop is placed on a glass surface on my writing desk. So that's a slippery surface and the lid opens without any hint of shifting of the body... excellent in my opinion.

So how? Have you received your laptop from the Microsoft store? Would be interested to know what your final cost was.
