The resolution of PW is higher than the basic. Actually generally speaking, Kindles are not very good for pdfs (those with complex layouts) due to the small screen size and speed of panning.

thank u, then i will just get the basic, to try out.

Hi guys,

I am interested in getting a kindle but am not very sure how it works. I usually have the ebooks in epub format.. does it work on a kindle? Does the kindle has usb port so I can transfer the files? Does kindly need data plan?

Hope to get some knowledge about a kindle before I actually purchase one.
By the way, where is a good place to buy a kindle? Thank you all in advance.

I am using the kindle basic. The kindle comes with the usb port. so you can transfer the books from your computer to kindle.

Kindle basic support quite a few formats:
Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion

Kindle do not need a data plan but it can connect to WIFI.

Hope this helps.

If your epubs are not protected, you can use Calibre to convert to .mobi (the Kindle format).

You can either buy a Kindle from amazon, shipping it to a forwarder like comgateway or borderlinx (cheapest) as S'pore is not an 'approved kindle country', or get it from a local importer (more expensive).

for reading pdf, any difference of performance between basic and pw?

i recommend you not to use the e-ink Kindles as a pdf reader. However, if your pdf are purely text, or contains few charts and diagrams, Calibre will handle the conversion fairly well. If your pdf are full of equations and pictures, you'll very much prefer a basic tablet with zoom capabilities over the Kindles.

For the black friday promotion, i shipped three Kindle Basic for my family and friends via HopShopGo (which is a revamped Comgateway partnership with Paypal) and was (pleasantly) surprised to see that Amazon changed their Kindle Basic shipment packaging to padded envelopes. Each Kindle Basic weighs 0.5kg, it only cost me US$15 (after a $2 discount from the festive 10% off) to ship THREE Kindles.

So if anyone ever want to ship more than one Kindle Basic to Singapore, I recommend that you order from Amazon individually. that is, try not to buy more than one Kindle at a time or else they will likely repackage it into a larger box, especially if you have other non-standard sized purchases from Amazon. I cannot be sure all freight forwarders have the same volumetric vs physical weight policy, but for sure I'll take individually packed padded envelopes, better protection and let whichever your preferred freight forwarder charge you 500g for one package.

Here's for future reference: $15 for three devices :s13:

Yes aside from the S$400 limitation, the trick is to find out the 'optimum' number of devices shipped together. How many Kindle basics would you say can fit one standard 'envelope'?

just divide the S$400 by the device price.

it's difficult to say what Amazon uses when you order several items, and it also depends on what you buy. the question would be, if i ship three, four, or five Kindles together will i get hit by freight forwarders with volumetric weight if Amazon choose to use a supersized box. It can happen, and has happened to me :s13:

the UPS ground envelope Amazon uses for individual order is only for one device, so you'll get several "arrivals" at your forwarder. even if Amazon uses non-standard boxes for three, four, or five Kindles, and it (the entire box with the devices) weighs more than its volumetric weight, you'll still pay the same as if Amazon send three, four, or five Kindles individually to your forwarder, so why opt for group order when there seem to be no upside to group ordering? that is to say, Amazon may use the oversized boxes if they dont have something that fits your entire order, but no such instance if you order individually.

Whether or not the forwarder chooses to use a box to consolidate the orders does not matter since they charge you based on the weight incoming. Usually they just stick a mailer tag and forward the stuff to Singapore. However in my case, HopShopGo decided they want to add another A3 DHL padded envelope to each of the UPS envelope for reasons I don't understand. Who cares as long as my purchase is safe?

Anyway, I just realised the actual weight including the envelope is now 380g, stated on the envelope by DHL. So if you use a forwarder that charges actual weight instead of rounding up to "steps" of 500g/1kg, you could potentially save a little bit too.

What's the frequency that Amazon would come up with new models? When's the next period that new kindles would be introduced? Anyone knows? tks.

I chose CGW since I don't have a citibank card.

Edit: Just checked out Borderlinx and just realised they now accept other banks cards... Lol.

Nice to know BL accepts more credit cards now, I'll try it...

The display technology of a tablet is totally different from Kindles (which has more or less alien technology). For long-form reading, the latter is the best! :)

If most of your reading materials have a lot of pictures, then a tablet would be more appropriate. Kindle is best of long-form books with primarily text.
