Without naming Boeing's situation specifically, Trump tweeted, "Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!"

I like trump’s 2 cents worth on the issue.

US pilots complained at least 5 times about Boeing 737 Max problems, records show

I suggest you read more. The software and features isn't even in the manuals for the lion air pilots to study and understand. Boeing made the manuals. Boeing is liable for the pilots being poorly trained.

Pilots groups have complained that Boeing did too little to ensure that pilots or airlines were aware of the new anti-stall feature - or knew how to turn it off if it were malfunctioning or acting on faulty data.

In another report in the FAA database, a commercial airline pilot complained about how the FAA and Boeing were handling the problem, Politico said.

While the FAA had issued an emergency directive on Nov 7, 2018, to help pilots understand how to handle problems with the anti-stall technology, "it does nothing to address the systems issues," the pilot wrote.

The pilot further noted that the flight manuals had yet to be updated with that information at that time.

"I think it is unconscionable that a manufacturer, the FAA, and the airlines would have pilots flying an airplane without adequately training, or even providing available resources and sufficient documentation to understand the highly complex systems that differentiate this aircraft from prior models," the pilot wrote.

"The fact that this airplane requires such jury rigging to fly is a red flag. Now we know the systems employed are error prone - even if the pilots aren't sure what those systems are, what redundancies are in place, and failure modes."

The pilot added: "I am left to wonder: what else don't I know? The Flight Manual is inadequate and almost criminally insufficient. All airlines that operate the Max must insist that Boeing incorporate ALL systems in their manuals."

Imagine the software upgrades + retraining cost vs the lawsuits and plane crash, grounding of planes... They had better solve it fast.
Meanwhile I'm affected as I hold quite a sum in BA for years.

temporary yes... but it could take months before the official investigations can conclude. Till then, all 737 Max 8 & 9 will be grounded. I think airlines all over the world will be demanding compensation from Boeing for the loss of usage/earning... And not to forget class-action suits from familes of the 300 over dead passengers.

Yes, I think you are correct. But these problems are temporary, although it may take some time to solve them.

FAA has temporarily grounded all 737 Max.

This is IT!
What’s my takeaway from this: do not fly planes that are less than 2 years old. Some 15 years ago, SIA took out full page advertisements bragging that the average age of their planes was 2. Now it should be around 10.

Each Boeing Max , around 1 year old, would have made 4 short haul flights a day (2 takeoffs and 2 landings). Say 200 out of the 300 737Max planes are in the same state, that means they have been flown 240,000 times.

The 2 WhatsApp videos about the plane crash will not be doing Boeing any favors on their reputation.
Seem like Airbus will stand to gain for more plane orders instead.

Boeing Jan 2020 300 PUT is trading at massive $11.80. If you are okay with owning 100 shares of Boeing at $300, just sell this 1 of this PUT. You get paid $1180.
