Once the dividend is give, the stock price will drop, due to market adjustment.

Whatever gain you receive from the dividend will return back due to price adjustment.

Yes, there are some stocks that could maintain it's price after XD, but these are the minority. 1 out of 10.

And you must be a genius to know which one is the one.

No, that's not the only scenario when Singapore REITs could go pear shaped. It's a single sector in a single, small country (with a tiny fraction outside Singapore and heavily skewed into the region). There are some risks in that, and it doesn't take Hollywood imagination to figure them out.

Most Singaporeans aren't buying a broad, low cost REIT index fund, by the way. They're buying one or a couple individual REITs. That's even more portfolio risk.


They do, but their overseas diversification is limited and, to the extent it exists, heavily skewed into the region. It's not adequate global diversification.

Risk is relative.

It depends on what and when you buy.

It's the same with stocks and everything else.

If you short the stock, your brokerage company will requires you to pay the dividend to those that long the stock.

End up the same.

You think the brokerage company so stupid allow you to profit like that?

If so simple, everyone will be doing this already.

Not really, no. Diversification works. Singapore REITs might be interesting as part of your portfolio, but they should not dominate your portfolio.

Hihi lets say for example if i hold one counter and saw a stock going to give out dividends, have enough time to sell off my counter and use the money to buy the other counter and so on yah?

don yaya papaya la , I know last time ur starhub is freehold because u bought it a low price, then sold to recover ur initial capital, from then on all the remaining starhub shares u had is "free".. too bad u sold it after the telcos selldown recently

Diversification, I agree with you.

But diversification is not the same as knowing what and when to buy.

Your portfolio can be anything, as long as you know what you are buying.

The dividends from REITs aren't guaranteed though; the REIT can and will cut the dividend if they aren't earning enough rent to cover it.

im sure no one would mind him opening so many threads, if he was at least even 1% interested in the replies. he doesn't seem to be even 0.00001% interested in the replies at all, that's the problem.

Depends on whether you want to have your initial capital sum invested to fall back on, should you need it in an emergency, in the later years. But having this option available would also mean sacrificing the payouts, ie. you will receive a lower payout as compared to other retirement plans.
