I guess WASAPI is probably the closer to ASIO without actually having proper ASIO drivers from the manufacturer, I find the quality about the same without the weird glitches. DirectSound just sounds bad.

AI Overview

In MediaMonkey, WASAPI is a modern audio API that offers potentially higher sound quality through bit-perfect playback in exclusive mode and lower latency, while DirectSound is a more compatible but older method that goes through the Windows sound mixer, which can modify the audio signal. WASAPI is generally preferred for modern Windows systems (Vista and later) for audiophile listening, whereas DirectSound is a fallback option, especially for older operating systems or when WASAPI's features aren't needed.

WASAPI (Windows Audio Session API)

  • Pros:
    • Bit-Perfect Playback: In exclusive mode, WASAPI gives the audio software direct control of the audio hardware, bypassing the Windows mixer and preserving the original audio signal.
    • Lower Latency: This exclusive access also allows for lower latency, which is beneficial for real-time applications like DJ software.
    • High-Quality Resampling: WASAPI in shared mode can use a high-quality resampler, which is still an improvement over DirectSound.
  • Cons:
    • Exclusive Mode Restrictions: When in exclusive mode, WASAPI blocks other applications from producing sound, as the audio hardware is exclusively controlled by MediaMonkey.
    • Not on Older OS: WASAPI is not available on Windows XP.
DirectSound
  • Pros:
    • High Compatibility: DirectSound is the most compatible option and is often a reliable last resort if WASAPI doesn't work correctly.

    • Better Than MME: It is a more modern and capable audio interface than the legacy MME (Multimedia Events).
  • Cons:
    • Goes Through Mixer: DirectSound sends audio through the Windows sound mixer, which can alter the audio signal.

    • Higher Latency: It generally has higher latency compared to WASAPI in exclusive mode, especially on Windows Vista and later, where it's emulated.
When to Choose Which
  • For the Best Sound Quality: Try WASAPI exclusive mode first for bit-perfect, high-fidelity audio.

  • For Other Applications Sounding at the Same Time: Use WASAPI shared mode for improved latency and performance over DirectSound while still allowing other apps to make sound.

  • For Older Systems or Compatibility Issues: Use DirectSound if you are on an older operating system or experience problems with WASAPI.

Both SXFI AMP and KZ AM02 DAC supports inline microphone from a 4 pole jack from IEM cable like KZ M2, surprised KA13 does not.

AI Overview

The FiiO KA13 does not support a microphone from an IEM or headset
. While it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, it is a TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connector for stereo audio output only, not a TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) connector that includes a microphone input.
Here's a breakdown of why it doesn't work:
  • Audio output only: The FiiO KA13 is a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and headphone amplifier. Its sole purpose is to improve the quality of audio playback from your source device. It is designed to take a digital audio signal and convert it into a high-quality analog signal for your headphones.
  • No microphone input circuitry: The internal hardware of the KA13 is not built to accept a microphone's analog signal, digitize it, and send it back to your source device. It lacks the necessary hardware for this two-way communication.
  • TRRS vs. TRS: Headphone jacks come in different configurations. A 4-pole plug (TRRS) is used for headsets with a microphone, with the fourth contact dedicated to the microphone signal. The KA13's 3.5mm port only accepts a standard 3-pole (TRS) stereo audio plug for headphones without a mic.

This dongle actually able to power Sennheiser HD620S
I am surprised this little dongle can drive my Philips Fidelio X3 so well.... my Creative ZxR probably have to go to high gain to reach the same power.... or at least high volume percentage on low gain.

What a week... ordered Pixel 9a... received it, setup everything.. and it died on 2nd day...

Then had to return it now waiting for refund.. if it gets approved.

Then order Poco F7 Pro.. and now setting it up...

I guess if I decide to buy a Bluetooth DAC AMP or Bluetooth adapter or wireless IEM or headphone.. I am well covered.

What you think of this ah? Use for jogging , need ip55? Not too ex so that can change every 2 years
The features and software like not bad, but the only thing not good is cannot change out the main IEM if you do not like or want to change. What I propose as an alternative is get a wireless bluetooth adapter for IEM that uses QDC connector, then suddenly you get to choose from a range of IEM with different setup to enjoy your music with.

https://kz-audio.com/kz-an01.html

About $35 for the adapter.
https://shopee.sg/KZ-AN01-Wireless-...55&xptdk=264b3929-ec13-4bd6-b619-6fea9a8aab55

Or this newer version with APTX Adaptive at around $46.
https://shopee.sg/KZ-AE01-PRO-Bluet...72&xptdk=8de808f1-0ef8-4f93-9e13-e4f349494b72

Then your choice of IEM ranges from as low as $4.80 all the way to $200++ many many choices.

Then after a few years, if the battery worn out.. or spoil... just replace the wireless adapter. Your IEM are still safe... can convert back to wired... or just get another wireless adapter lor.

The best part I like about IEM at least what I discovered is that cable are detachable... I have way too many pair of earphones dying due to cable breakage after some time. Even tried before wrapping it up in electrical tape when the rubber casing on the cable cui...
