What are the tests that you personally do/require the seller to do before purchasing a second hand gpu? Found a few tips online but want to know what's done in an SG context.

check if theres' warranty and wheter its valid

and talk with the seller first what if there is issue with the gpu after u installed it, ideally get it in black and white

honestly nothing much else u can do apart from the visual inspection when u get it

i had a bad experience once but fortunately the asus distributor replaced me a working card without any qns asked~

none, just ask whether it is a working card and whether can give 7 days personal warranty if the warranty period is over.

1) Check the condition, make sure no signs of oxidation etc.

This is an example notice the heatsink has white white this is oxidation.
Why need to spot this? Cuz there will be not honest seller selling mining cards.

2) Ask if the seller can allow return, those cannot return don't buy.
I know some really one kind they think their PC parts are OK.
But sometimes it may have issues or not compatible with the person PC.

3) Go home prepare your PC first.
Uninstall any previous graphic card driver while internet is disconnected.
Install that graphic card with latest GPU driver.
Run 3Dmark make sure it works properly.
If midway the benchmark no display/black screen or artifact than the card has issues.

What I observe is generally buy Nvidia graphic card will be have lesser chance of getting a DOA card.
AMD Radeon wise is hit and miss I do know some of my friend brought a used Radeon end
up not working.

In particular RX580 series which I know a few brought from someone but not working.

Yes that is one thing, second is people scare you play them to get refund.
I do encounter before last time.
This Uncle brought from me a GPU than later say the fan got rattling noise.

I was like :s11: rattling noise usually come from case fan or CPU fan.
Out of goodwill I just allow return.
For sure you encounter these type of people.

There should either be manufacturer warranty, or a few days to test and return the card if faulty. If not, I won't consider. (I've sold a couple of GPUs based on above.)

haha for me I'm the buyer. anyway fair enough. I'm a stranger to the seller and vice versa.. no reason to trust each other. if only there was a service for a.3rd party to assess to item. like a mechanic.

From the seller's perspective, I'm worry that the buyer mishandles the card after buying and claims the card is defective. There are instances when buyer request to test the card at my place, but I decline due to privacy.

On the other hand, my concern is the card is already faulty as a buyer.

Best case scenario is having the manufacturing warranty with receipt. That is my assurance, as a buyer, if the card is faulty and I wont bother going to the seller.

Since no members mentioned this which i think is important. Ask about the condition of thermal paste if possible. Usually the thermal paste for used gpu are already dried up even if the seller been using or not been using the gpu for certain amount of time. I will also replace thermal paste to something better after purchasing new/used gpu.

true.. in an ideal world.. that's why I'm also looking at gpu repair services just in case. Reading up on thermal paste and thermal pad wear and tear.

is it possible to see the condition without removing the fans? doubt the seller wants to remove if that's the case.

3090 is pretty old, most should be out of warranty or maybe a few months left. Just check condition of the card, and if seller is willing to provide 7 days personal warranty.

End of day without any warranty is gentlemen to gentlemen agreement liao. All the best!
