Canon Powershot S100

with the s100 aperture range from f2 to f8, does it make alot of difference from the 2 extremes?
noob here who just into photography..hehe

u meant F2.0 to F5.9. not much diff in outdoor. but very diff in indoor when more light r needed. F2.0 allows the sensor to take in more light n thus greater speed is possible.

panny lx5 n s100 r belong to the same class - "pro-sumer".
ok to change to s100, if u like everything of lx5 except the size/weight n dun use the hotshoe.

Yeap, I don't use the hotshoe. Any idea how much can a LX5 fetch these days and S100 cost? Need to calculate how much to top up.

Hey guys, interested to get this camera after seeing review made by a lot Youtubers.

Does this camera fits me? As i'm using it for random shooting, family outing, scenery shooting etc.. Mostly for family uses.

you misunderstood the spec:
f2 to f5.9 is the max aperture for both ends of the tele lens from max wide to max tele respectively.

i think almost all cams can easily shoot f8...not difficult to produce lens to match.

correct, which means when max zoom-in, the max aperture is only f5.9. this is actually means small when compared to f2.
f2 opens up much more n thus allows much more light into the sensor. so when u need more light (eg. indoor), try not to zoom-in, use the widest instead. walk a step or 2 in front if there is a need.
in other words, if zoom-in, the S100's f2 feature cannot b used.

Hi, sorry to bump up this thread.

Read thru the pages and the canon s100 is indeed a very good camera. I am really a total noob when it comes to photography/camera. Am hoping for some inputs.

I was abt to purchase S100 at Alan Photo ($620) when the guy recommended me to get Olympus XZ-1 ($540) instead.
Read abt both cameras online and I guess both are strong in their own points. My main concern is to take food photographs and use it occasionally for traveling.

I tested both cameras out and the photos reflected on the LCD screen on S100 looks better than that of the XZ-1. but I don't know how it will be once uploaded. Also, my friends encouraged me to get Canon s100 as it is a very cam for taking shots in low-light, and often food outlets usually have dim lights. But the XZ-1's lens are much better than that of canon's.

Oh yes, I will be using Auto mode most of the time. Or at least till I learn more about photography.

s100 compare to olympus EMP1 which is better pns cam...
will use it for travel and daily carry around camera.
