Songthaew is cheap (no air con), if there is one happen to near you, can hire it. Price is 30baht per person, if more person can negotiate with the driver.

@roborovsky
Did you hire a private driver during your trip? I'm looking for 1, for a day trip, a car will be better. Usually private driver cum van, too big for 2 person.
No, didn't.
Saw a Sg couple with an elderly granny hired 1 driver with car while dining at Coconut Shell Thai Food.

thank you for the quick reply!

for Dtac changi recommends, is it same collection counter at changi terminal 1?

Will check out bolt as well!
you can try out INDRIVE as well, the fare can be adjustable if you find their recommended fare is too high.

songthaew fare is fixed at 30 baht per person, unless you want to hire the whole songthaew to go out of the city then can negotiate.

Randomly chanced upon Coconut Shell and tried. Boy, except my table, all were ang mohs! I thought tourist trap.. :ROFLMAO:

The food turned out to be quite delicious especially the Khao Soi which was white instead of the usual red curry.

Am doing a driving trip around Chiang Mai region now. Some pointers to share -

1) local telcos - AIS have best coverage, followed by truemove and lastly dtac.

My party using truemove SIM card could get 5g coverage at many areas, while my Dtac (via Airalo esim) had 4g at best only

right after exiting the arrival area of Chiang mai airport there is a true sim counter so not difficult to buy.

2) Mae Sai border crossing with Myanmar is closed until Q1 2023, so cannot cross to the Burmese side for shopping.

3) There is a fun route north of Mae Fah Luang Arboretum that you can take to directly straddle the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Doi Chang military outpost offer a scenic view. MUST bring passport along as we were subjected to 3 rounds of passport inspection and photo taking by Thai border guards. Apparently this route is commonly used by illegal Burmese migrants.

4) if you are planning to drive around mountain region like Pai, Mae Hong Son etc with party of 3 and more, please rent a 2.0 sedan (e.g Camry) at minimum for the required power.

One of our rental car - 1.6 Nissan slyphy could barely go up the mountainous routes and need to disable the aircon.

The other rental car which is a turbodiesel (Nissan Terra) had no issue going up the roads and it can handleoff-road mountain roads as well.

Planning a trip with some friends around Songkran for 10+ days, roughly 4-8 of us depending on work commitments.

1. Current out of town activities planned are Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon, Grand Canyon Water Park, Shooting Range, Go Kart and night safari,
Tentative on:
- Zip Lining and Bungy jumping after reading about past occurences.
- Elephant sanctuary, positive training/zoo same as beatings - questionable ethics?
- Chiang Rai (No real interest in temples)
- Pai (Michael Jackson is everywhere, no need to go to a hippie village that everyone on reddit says its too commercialized now:rolleyes:)

Q) Should we rent a car for days going outside the city or is it just Doi Inthanon deserted of vehicles?
(https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/threads/gpgt-chiangmai-8-days-trip-throwback.6755632/page-4 mentioned nearly getting stuck at Doi Inthanon)
- Saw Klook/Airbnb guides up there which we won't mind unless want to spend more time at areas like swimming at the waterfall.
- Read that Songthaews can be booked on grab to fit my group

2. Songkran activities watch the parade, get soaked, Grand Canyon if there's an event, nightlife
Q) Will supermarkets/7-11 be our only option for 3 days or once the cease fire timing, food stalls resume as normal?
- Probably gonna avoid soaking too much and goggle up at the moat area cause I have seen videos of 'people' taking dumps there
- Saturday/Sunday markets probably closed

3. Hotel/Airbnb Location
Going to be a mix of couples and singles so we might split accommodation since big places on Airbnb are pretty pricey.
Q) Would old city/Nimman or a diff area be better to stay at if travelling during Songkran is nightlife/Grand Canyon and mountains are east of Nimman?
- Staying at the Old city be nigh impossible/ dangerous to travel out to Nimman during Songkran?
- Night noise worse at old city during Songkran vs Nimman?
- Read Nimman is roughly on flight path

How much is the truemove SIM card and how long it last? Thanks

I haven't go Chiangmai yet, currently planning for my trip in Jan 2023.
Reading and watching alot on Chiang mai.

For 4-8 person, I think it's better to hire a driver cum car or van. Or rent a car or van, if the driving person got experience in driving mountain road. Doi Suthep road still ok but Doi Inthanon should be a challenge.

Songkran is ang mo favourite. Old City and river side hotel or airbnb should be ang mo best staying area.
Nimman road area is popular with chinese tourist, so I think this area should be less affected.
I also read Nimman is on the fight path when the flight take off. Last flight is around 6pm local time.
When I was choosing hotel and airbnb, I read the reviews. Few places are badly affected, but not all are affected. Nimman area has alot of resident house and condo. University is nearby.
Btw I pick airbnb LIV@NIMMAN Condo, only 1st floor airbnb available but with pool access. In soi 2, about 10 mins walk to One Nimman.
