Think many tend to generalise and skim over the real issue. Scheme to control car population is not wrong. But the way its done, at the expense of people and money is not right. There are schemes that don't hurt and cost people much money, but the mentality is always choose to do it in such a way where profiting from people the most is the only way. That goes to say how well taken care of is the people :s22:. e.g. could have use the ballot system perhaps.

How true ...

The initial intention always sounds reasonable, but after implementing, always seems to be more of a exploit. One great example is ERP.

Worst is think many don't really see the whole picture, like to take system word for granted. People say coe and erp is to solve vehicle congestion issue means its so ah? Have all that stop the jams and congestions? Prevent the vehicle population from growing? Think the answer in many is no. In fact, the situation seems to have worsen, in many people impression. e.g. many parts of p.i.e, from last time peak hour congestion only, now become most of the day also congested, off peak hours included, go figures :s22:.

Have people forgot that the vehicle population growth is already accounted for in the long term plan years earlier? How many vehicles and how much the population to grow by each year are all planned for and controlled. The plan is there all along, should have ample time to prepare, make sure the infrastructure meet the growing need, yet system seems never react fast enough, resulting in situation get out of hand. From active (plan already in place, could have prepare for it), become passive (wait for things to happen then react). Think perhaps something may not be right within the system, not communicating well with each other maybe.

So, to say, if plan already in place for growth, what purpose does all those schemes served then, if cannot solve the problem much? Thus, cannot blame many for thinking that they are more of an excuse to profit then solve any real issue.

QFT.

we're the only country that has this CEO scheme rite?

HK is what, about the same size as us? Has the same built up area as us? With an even higher population?

But I don't see them implementing this scheme and their cars are much cheaper than ours.

I ask my HK friends and they say they will raise hell if the gov ever tries to pull a COE stunt on them.

$83k for a 2 yr old vios :s13: :s13:

Really uniquely singapore :s22:

What I don't really get is, why are second hand car like Vios and Corollas depreciating linearly.

As in.

8 year old is just 80% of new car price. 7 year old is 70%.

Doesn't make much sense to buy second hand car.

It's true that toyota is very reliable.

But for my case would be i like to drive different cars after 5 years. So i look around for a 2nd hand car that is in decent condition.

I seem to hear that during 80s or 90s ... Singapore is too small, stop at 2 birth, not enough land for housing and cars and we all know what happened next ...

so you think it will work out if got no COE....toyota only 20k?

Think doesn't matter if got coe or not. Cause the number of vehicles on the road and the growth rate already fixed in the long term plan and ongoing. With that in mind, coe is just a tool for distribution, not a tool for control, if able to see the bigger picture. In the case of current system, its distributed base on money rather than need. Thus the one facilitating make money regardless of which way it goes. If not for money, think would have fall back on the time tested ballot system already.

do u mean 2 yrs old n 3 yrs old, accordingly?
coz new car needs more cash.
says a new Mazda3 is 100k, need 40k cash.
a 3 yrs old Mazda3 costs 70k, need 28k cash.

Don't be surprised it is... hdb, pri sch slot, etc. It seems to be sort of the default system to fall back on all along. The question then is, why not for coe, not why coe.

Besides, land alot often is a for profit commercial transaction (if meaning those sell to developer). If can outright say it that coe is not to solve a problem (since alot always like to claim that it is), but a commercial transaction to profit. Then would gladly accept ballot may not be the way.

I am talking about private land. Not a lease.

Even HDB, then why AMK Bishan more expensive than sengkang BTO?

Just ballot everything loh! So fair ma...

Having a car is not a basic need. Unless you live in somewhere like USA, canada.
