If you are still undecided about which party to vote for in the coming election, and you are genuinely concerned about the high cost of living, the most effective way to make your voice heard is to vote for the opposition.

History shows that the PAP only responds meaningfully to the people's concerns when their political dominance is threatened — not merely through feedback or complaints, but through actual loss of votes.

A clear precedent is the 7 May 2011 General Election. Public outrage over ministers’ salaries was one of the key issues. That election turned out to be one of the PAP’s worst performances:
• The PAP lost Aljunied GRC — a historic loss.
• A Cabinet minister, George Yeo, was also defeated.

only after their loss the PAP took the following measures—-

• Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong appointed an independent Salary Review Committee.
• In January 2012, a new salary framework was introduced.
• Significant salary cuts were implemented:
• Prime Minister: Salary reduced by 36% (from S$3.07 million to S$2.2 million).
• Entry-level Ministers: Salaries cut by about 37% (from S$1.58 million to S$1.1 million).
• President: Salary reduced by 51% (to S$1.54 million).
• Pensions for political appointment holders were removed for those appointed from May 21, 2011 onwards.
• Salaries were still benchmarked competitively against top private sector earners, but with a 40% discount to reflect the ethos of public service.
In short: only after losing significant votes did the PAP act to address a major public grievance.

The lesson remains: Voting sends the strongest signal. If you want action, not just promises, vote accordingly.

Going to the WP rally tonight? Check online for real-time crowd size

60cf90.jpg

Those heading to Yusof Ishak Secondary School tonight for the WP’s Punggol GRC rally are encouraged to check Crowd@YusofIshak, from 6pm to 11pm, for information on the crowd situation in real time, area closures and available transport nodes.

Access to Soo Teck and Sumang LRT stations may be restricted for public safety, the police said on Facebook. The stations will remain open for commuters who are alighting.

Members of the public are advised to be patient and to follow the instructions of security staff on duty.

“Duck and dog”

It seems the two independent candidates of GE2025 intend to band together for a rally.

Earlier today, Mountbatten SMC candidate Jeremy Tan told me his upcoming rally could be a meeting of “duck and dog”.

That is a reference to the respective symbols representing Radin Mas SMC independent candidate Darryl Lo and Mr Tan on the ballot papers.

The two men have a mutual friend and that spurred them to get in touch, Mr Tan said.

They’re still waiting for the permit to be issued, but if the rally happens, Mr Lo said he would be joining Mr Tan.

He Ting Ru takes a break from house visits to play pickleball with residents

WP’s candidate for Sengkang GRC He Ting Ru took a brief break from her house visits on Monday to play pickleball with some residents.

In an Instagram post, Ms He said that the group comprised five siblings and their partners. She knew the siblings’ mother, who had previously shared her concerns about the rising cost of living.

Ms He was seen in a video serving the ball to her husband Terence Tan, who had left the opposition party to focus on his career and family.

She said: “It’s always lovely to see families use public spaces in such meaningful ways. We hope to keep working to create such spaces that foster community, health and happiness!”

WP's Faisal Manap doesn't see Tampines fight as one that pits himself against PAP’s Masagos Zulkifli

b87c1c.jpg

WP's Faisal Manap, who is leading the opposition party's team in Tampines GRC, said he does not see the battle in the constituency as one of himself going up against the PAP's Masagos Zulkifli, adding that it is a competition between teams.

The WP vice-chair was asked by the media in Tampines today for his thoughts on how it seemed like he was being pitted against Mr Masagos, who is anchoring the PAP team there.

Mr Faisal, who moved out of Aljunied GRC to contest Tampines GRC, said: "It's a competition between two teams. It's more of a team versus another team, so I don't see myself going against Masagos.

"But again, being in a GRC, which is a system established by the PAP, you must have a minority. And here I am - a minority for my team."

Businesses cash in on election fever

From serving alcoholic drinks to offering car washes and toys, local businesses are tapping into the GE2025 buzz with election-themed food, merchandise and services.

Semma Bistro, an eatery located in Springside Walk along Sembawang Road, is offering alcohol shots inspired by five local political parties. The drinks will be available until the end of May.

Section D Bar in Sengkang is hosting an election-themed party on Wednesday night, complete with GE2025-inspired drinks.

Several businesses have turned to online marketplace Carousell to sell keychain toys and car decals featuring election-themed designs.

Some eateries, car wash firms and futsal venues are offering special deals to encourage voters to visit them on Polling Day.

PAP Sembawang GRC rally: S’pore needs MPs who make the hours count, says Mariam Jaafar

092bf4.jpg

Sembawang GRC candidate Mariam Jaafar opened her speech with a shout-out to English football club Liverpool, which won its 20th league title.

"Sorry Minister Ong, Shi Xuan, (but) we're even now," she quipped, in reference to the men’s support for Manchester United.

In response to opposition politicians who criticise PAP backbenchers as yes-men and yes-women, Ms Mariam said: “I am not a "yes-woman." But I say ‘yes’ to hard work, ‘yes’ to better lives, ‘yes’ to a brighter future for you!”

Addressing SDP chief Chee Soon Juan’s speech last night that SDP candidates will be full-time MPs if elected, Ms Mariam said that being full-time is not the same as being effective.

“Singapore doesn't need MPs who clock in and out. We need MPs who make the hours count,” she said.

Speaking to the crowd at tonight’s rally, Ms Mariam, who is a managing director and senior partner at Boston Consulting Group, shared that since being elected in 2020, she has launched multiple initiatives that have made a tangible impact on the lives of Sembawang residents and is currently working on more upcoming projects.

“It doesn’t really matter whether an MP is part-time or full-time. It matters whether we are grounded and effective. Whether we solve problems and deliver results,” said the 48-year-old.

WP rally: ‘If these candidates do not get elected this time, there may be no next time’ says Sylvia Lim

dc643b.jpg

Ms Sylvia Lim, WP chair and candidate in Aljunied GRC, used her speech to pay tribute to the female candidates on the party’s slate at this election.

“In my 20 plus years with WP, I can confidently say that this batch of our candidates, both men and women, is the most promising batch that WP has fielded,” she said.

And she urged voters to not dither about whether to cast their votes for the WP.

She said: “If these candidates do not get elected this time, there may be no next time. The electoral boundaries may change. So there is no time to waste on this. Let us not dither about whether to cast your vote for WP this time or not. If you do not do it this time, you may not have a chance the next time.”

PAP Sembawang GRC rally: More ‘big projects’ lined up for Sembawang, says Vikram Nair

10471e.jpg

Speaking at the PAP rally at the hard court and field beside Sun Plaza in Sembawang, incumbent Sembawang GRC MP Vikram Nair highlighted the increase in the number of sheltered walkways, green spaces and neighbourhood renewal programmes over the past five years.

“Many of these have helped to create a better home for residents,” said Mr Nair, who is the chair of Sembawang Town Council.

Mr Nair added that since the Ministry of National Development started rating town councils in 2009, Sembawang Town Council has always received a perfect score.

Turning to the “big projects” lined up for the area, he said there are plans to link the cycling path connectors with East Coast, Marina Bay and Lim Chu Kang.

More solar panels will also be installed, with 770 more HDB blocks to go green in the next five years.

Mr Nair took aim at a proposal by the SDP to cut the defence budget to help fund additional social spending.

He asked the audience: "But if war were to come to us, how many of you think some other country will come to defend us?"

"No!" was heard in response.

Mr Nair, who has been chair of the Governmental Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs for a decade, then noted that Singapore has strong defence ties including with countries like the United States.

Still, he added: "They are all our friends, but asking someone else's people to die for you is a very big ask."
