CPU Cooler to recommend

Hi Guys,

i just got a 4790K and intend to run it at stock. wont be overclocking.

the intel stock cooler doesn't seems to hold it and load can be as high as near to 100c even after resiting and reapply thermal paste.

Any cooler to recommend? be it air or aio? im looking at cryorig m9i, H7, be quiet pure rock, thermaltake TH120 (seems like a good price) , and H60 corsair.

or any dual radiator aio which it isnt too expensive?

The i7-4790K tends to run hot as the default voltage is too high. You can try lowering the voltage which will help with the heat.

Suspect the TIM under your IHS has completely dried up.
I had the same issue with my 6700K previously and even changing a new cooler did not do much for temps. I delidded mine and temps went down by 25 degrees under load. You might want to check that out.

i believe K series CPU dont come with a stock cooler. When i got my 7700k, i didnt know it did not come with a cooler. So i installed the stock one with a premium paste. Temps were 90-100 degrees and BSOD very often. The next day went to simlim to get the hyper evo 212. Entry level and reasonably priced and used it for almost 3 years, just install and forget kind. I just switched out from it and went to aio 2 weeks ago.

I actually got someone on Carousell to do it for me. He took pics and the TIM was like cement. He removed it and applied Liquid Metal and when I plugged it back into my board, I was shocked to see a huge difference in both my idle and load temps in both stock and overclocked settings.

Another good brand is Thermalright. Can search on Taobao. Apparently they offer Noctua-like performance at a fraction of the price. I didn't know of this brand until I started going on taobao but their products are quite well reviewed

How much were you charged? I think my old CPU also need to delid sia.. my idle temps with stock cooler is 55-60 C and load at 90-100 C

Around $50 or less depeding on which gen CPUs' 9th Gen and above cost more due to soldered TIM. But I believe yours is the normal TIM so that is pretty straightforward and would cost less.

Your temps is similar to mine before I delid with my load hitting close to 90s. Idle was high 40s.

A better cooler is only going to help slightly because the TIM is completely dried up under the IHS and there is virtually no thermal transfer. Get it delidded then try back with your stock cooler before you even decide to change it out.

Starting from Intel's 3xxx series (ivy Bridge), Intel have been using TIM for all their consumer desktop CPUs. I believe even the current Comet Lake CPUs are using TIM for the mid/ lower CPU range.

Yes correct. Even some Comet Lake i5s have soldered or TIM depending on batch number. Basically the 9700k/10700k and up certainly is soldered. Anything below that safe to assume using TIM.

This TIM solution is really like a planned obsolesce from my opinion. While they are not expecting people to keep their CPU for that long, but there are people that may stick to their computer for a long time with no upgrades.

I’m on the verge of delidding my 7700k too. Just contemplating to glue the ihs back or just use the cpu bracket to clamp it down. Anyone delid without glueing the ihs back ? If so, is it difficult to align the ihs when the cpu is in the socket before clamping down with the bracket ?
