I’m on the verge of delidding my 7700k too. Just contemplating to glue the ihs back or just use the cpu bracket to clamp it down. Anyone delid without glueing the ihs back ? If so, is it difficult to align the ihs when the cpu is in the socket before clamping down with the bracket ?

I feel that glue it back is better. But what do you use to glue it back?

Are you going to DIY? Which compound are you going to use?

Hi Guys,

i just got a 4790K and intend to run it at stock. wont be overclocking.

the intel stock cooler doesn't seems to hold it and load can be as high as near to 100c even after resiting and reapply thermal paste.

Any cooler to recommend? be it air or aio? im looking at cryorig m9i, H7, be quiet pure rock, thermaltake TH120 (seems like a good price) , and H60 corsair.

or any dual radiator aio which it isnt too expensive?

Usually stock cooler should be good enough.
Check the following:
1. Heatsink is mounted to CPU firmly, if needed apply new thermal paste.
2. Not sure if you casing has additional fan at rear (not the power supply one). This help.
3. Check the FAN setting is BIOS. Making sure the fan control option is set correctly.

100C is either too high or wrong. Already higher then the specification of 4790K can take.

Yes, with the help of a cheap delid tool from China. A friend just delidded his with the same tool from the vendor with no issues. So i went ahead to order it just this morning.

I will probably not glue/silicone back. Just allow the socket to clamp it. Will probably apply lm on the entire die with clear nail polish coating on any visible transistors around it and on the ihs. On the ihs, a smaller area with lm because i understand when clamp back, the ihs will move abit.

Cpu die > conductornaut > ihs > kyronaut > aio cooler

Edit: If glue back, will probably use those high temps rtv silicone gasket

Wah, Delid + Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut + Relid is $105!!

I thought it is delid+conductanaut and relid is something like $55. He cannot be possibly charging that much for delidding. I do not remember paying such a price for my delid. I paid around $50 for damn sure. Did you PM him?

Some do not glue back the IHS to let the IHS sit as close as it can with the die. Gluing it back will add some gap between the die and IHS but the temperature drop from not gluing back the IHS is seriously like 1 or 2 degrees at max. I relidded mine anyway as I do not want the whole IHS just coming off incase I forget when removing it from the socket.

Just make sure you never ever forget to remove the CPU carefully taking into account the IHS is not glued back.

Do you mean when take out, to ensure that the pc case itself is laid down and cpu is facing ceiling? Do you think there will be difficulties removing the cpu now that the ihs is not attached to it ?

Yes correct.

There will not be difficulties removing the CPU. LGA sockets the CPU come out with little ease. Just make sure that you lift the processor slowly and hold it from the base after removing. There still will be resistance between the liquid metal and the IHS but it is not reason to dangle the CPU by holding by the IHS especially when it is not relidded. Hope this helps! And honestly, I would just relid as you are going to gain more than 15-20 degrees temp drop minimum anyway. Adding 1 or 2 degrees by relidding is not a big deal at all.

Oic. I read on the link you shared, it says :

Delid- $15
W/ Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut- $40
W/ Relid- $50
For 9th gen cpus, prices as stated above +$10

So I thought that Delid + Thermal Grizzly + Relid. If I am interested, will PM the seller.

Ahhhh. Ok i get what you meant. I guess the issue of relidding is that if im using a cheap tool to delid, it is the relidding part that is difficult as i'll need to glue the ihs and ensure that it is properly aligned.

i just dabbed superglue at 4 corners (6700k), but i was using rocket delid & relid tools and following their instructions

Suspect the TIM under your IHS has completely dried up.
I had the same issue with my 6700K previously and even changing a new cooler did not do much for temps. I delidded mine and temps went down by 25 degrees under load. You might want to check that out.

My previous 4790K overheated.
Now 6700K also same. A simple virus scan can hit 100°C.

Why Intel so cheapo use cheapo paste? :s11:

Use those cheap Silicone Thermal Glue that cost $1~3 work well. At least they're easy to remove when needed.

i just ordered a die guard. maybe you could try it as it is direct cpu die contact with heatsink

Lol if only running at stock or mild oc, then delid & direct die cooling feels like overdoing it...
Perhaps look into mb bios settings 1st, like disable multi-core enhancement if currently enabled/auto, & keep to intel power limits etc

All this talk about delidding got me too excited. Ask me friend can lend his tool and abit of his conductornaut and got it delivered to my place.

Aida 64 15mins run
Stock 4.5 - 74 deg c
Oc to 4.7 @ 1.29v - 57 deg c

A good 17 deg down! But the process of delidding and applying the lm was scary. I went without glueing though. Just clamp it back with the socket.

PS: already knew 4.7 was stable at 1.29 from previous oc sessions. Gonna try to push it up abit more sometime this week.

Wah! 17 degC down just by "Delidding"?
