Today starts new billing cycle for my mobile. Reset my data usage on iPhone n will closely monitor it. Singtel said they will monitor my case but couldn't quite explain what happened, just claimed that I could have apps running, HD photos on online purchase app etc etc. Just today for 12 hours out and I hardly surf, just checked emails occasionally (not on push notification), noticed 20mb used. My point to them, been doing the same since Oct last year when I got my iPhone 5 and on 4G. Yet average for past 6 mths less than 1GB. Usage pattern didn't change, but last cycle, almost 4GB used.

Now I come home, switch off 3G/LTE completely on my iPhone 5. So that it has to be on wifi and they can't say that it automatically switch to LTE sometimes.

If any of u on Singtel and noticed this happening only recently, please write or call them. So they know I am not the only one complaining.

I agreed with you totally.. same cases, low user and past 12 month have always less than 2Gb, can t remember when start to climb up to 6GB for past 3 month. Something is wrong...

I refused to pay for excess data charge. How do I know if it was some problem at their back end? They will waive the excess data charge.

There's a program called Onavo Count that monitors data traffic on your iPhone and tells you the amount of data each app is using.

I don't think it's tremendously accurate and might not be for people who don't feel comfortable installing a VPN profile for their iPhone, but if you're ok with this at least you might have a rough idea which app is sucking up your data allowance. Apparently the program is smart enough to exclude data transmitted via WIFI.

I'm from 3g to lte also see significant increase from 1gb to 3 gb.

Practice habit of switch off data when at home. Cause once out of range, auto use lte.

LTE so fast, imagine u use it on Facebook, those xiong load so fast, one scroll all xiong come out. How many data u waste.

From what I see your case is some app loading background, wasting your data.
My advise is format to clean iPhone 5, don't load apps, and see if your data got increase so much a not. Bo bian one, u not first apple user to complain.

iPhone does not use LTE despite it being faster than WiFi. The phone is programmed to use WiFi (if WiFi is available and switched on) regardless if the WiFi is faster or slower than cellular data.

The only similar bug happened with US's carrier Verizon. I don't think it has affected any other carriers.

But yes, the increase in usage may be due to the downloading of higher quality media. Since the speed of LTE is faster, video and photos may get downloaded in HD (same thing when youtube loads clearer when on WiFi than on 3G)

your cellular data is still on.... at home already using wifi, can off cellular data.... no need to toggle 3G/LTE since once you disable cellular data, it stops using data from your mobile plan.

Yes, I mean I switched off cellular data completely when home, so 3G/LTE also off.

i also face this problem...

i suspect it is my IP camera software that streams video to my iphone...it seems that every time i use the app, it chalks up data in blocks of 50mb...

now i terminate the application each time i finish using it (instead of leaving it running in the background)

have just reset my data usage statistic to coincide with my billing cycle - will monitor it for a month and see how...

i am using the app "megabytes" to track my data usage

so far it is in sync with "cellular data" in the usage settings - as well as usage at singtel

indeed that whenever i use my ip camera app, the data transferred is a lot (~50mb per minute)

Photo stream? Sync your photos while on wifi. Causing data usage.

Just an update: Back to normal, last cycle which ended yesterday was again below 1gb, nearly 708mb. So indeed the previous month was crazy!

i am curious about uploading photos to FB. does it consume a lot of download data? I thought it was only upload data.

I was uploading some photos via my LTE hotspot to FB - about 20 photos uploaded and the data spiked by about 300mb during this period. I checked the data usage before uploading and immediately after uploading to be sure.

i was not downloading or using the internet at that time for other purposes except for uploading the photos. is that normal for so much data to be consumed when uploading?
