Dell Laptop User Thread

Probably because we know Dell and Getronics well enough.

The D630 is not meant for the average home user. It lacks things like:

- Expresscard slot for popular user peripherals, sticking to PCcard for legacy business devices.
- Firewire port (on the older D610, D620) as DV cameras are more home consumer items
- Card reader for SD/MMC/MS etc because these are not widely used for business data storage
- Gloss screen LCD for quality video viewing

Instead, it focuses on business oriented features like:

- Smartcard reader for security
- Biometric security fingerprint reader for more security
- Connectors for docking station which is not found on Inspirons or XPS
- Better build quality as business machines are expected to last, not changed when the users fancy
- Modular swappable components such as extended batteries and optical drive

The problems you face are the same as the rest of the latitude users world wide, take heart that everyone knows and dell would do something about it if they could.

Yeah, I've to agree that the D630 are designed more to focus on biz users. But then again, if I cannot play a mp3 song smoothly it's still bad, at least to me. Anyway, I'm trying my best to talk to Dell and hope they can provide me a solution to my problem, or at least provide me an alternative.

I've already changed 2 motherboard on my D630, but the audio quality problem still persisted. Anyway, Dell is replacing the new set with me tomorrow and hopefully this will solve the audio output problem.

Quick check. I've been out of the news loop for Dell notebooks in the last 6 months (been enjoying my M1210). Has there been any news from Dell about their replacement for the current M1330 now? I know the model isn't that old, but just asking.

think no likely as m1330 is out just < 1 year.. and they have just introduced m1550 sometime last month (last year hur )... so think this range should still last some time from now.

Dell Vostro 1200

Hi All

I am thinking of getting the Vostro 1200 for my wife (normal office works and surfing). How efficient is the celeron m 540 processor?

Would love to hear from those who has bought this laptop before or has experience with celeron m 540?

i've heard some bad things about dell in the past, such as frequent breakdowns and poor warranty service, so i'd like to get opinions from actual dell customers.

lastly, can those who own an xps1530 tell me if it'll be suitable for me. i intend to use my lappie for photo editing / adobe illustrator related work as well as basic school work type of stuff.

This generation of Celeron M processor is slow if you are running windows vista. Get a low-mid range core 2 based processor instead.

Breakdowns are rare for the XPS series, they are very well made. Dell's post sales service is good also. XPS comes with Completecover warranty so even if there is a scratch, they can replace the scratched piece of plastic or metal.

We'll be having a joint promotion with Dell and Courts next weekend. Having roadshows at Funan, Causeway point and Courts Tampines Megamall. Bring along any old laptops (Dell if you can) to get extra trade-in value on top of their sale models.

Partition 250GB HDD

Guys,

I just received confirmation order on a Vostro 1400. Need your help. Will Dell help out with the partition before delivering the laptop to me? Please also suggest a partition allocation plan for a 250GB HDD. Will be running on XP pro. Thanks.

You should have requested for the additional partition when you ordered your computer. I think they charge $20 or $25 for partitioning.

i see, thanks. will the $25 be waived if it was requested at the initial order? didn't notice this option when i put in my order. anyway 250gb is BIG, how would you recommend to partition it?

my current 80GB is something like this
winxp 10gb
programs 20gb
media - rest of space

Their usual configuration:

2Xhidden (Primary partition)

1XOS (Primary partition)

1XRecovery (Primary partition)

A HDD can only have a maximum of 4 Primary partition. You won't be able to add any more partition.

sorry i don't quite get it. what is the 2xhidden partition for?can i do it in 3 allocations - os, apps, media files?

what would be a good allocation for xp and vista os?

DELL will use Extended partition to provide you with 5 partitions.

hi all, just bought vostro 1400. 1 problem i face....tried copied a dvd movie into a softcopy. but i cant play the movie. i also tried opening it with WMP but was re-directed to dell media direct. it prompted....unable to detect a dvd or dvd device on your computer. the same files are able to be played on my normal destop though. anyone faced this before? thanks
ps reason 1 burnt the dvds into softcopies is cos i will away for a couple of months in some ulu cities OJTing.
