Desktop Upgrade Recommendation

Hi all, its been awhile since I last built my desktop. Am thinking if there is any improvements to be made on my current build to boost up my FPS for gaming titles.

Below are my current PC specs from CPU-Z:

Processor: Intel i5-6600
Motherboard: ASUS B150 PRO GAMING/AURA
RAM: Kingston 2x 8GB DDR4 RAM
GPU: Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX1070 Super Jetstream
Monitor: BENQ XL2430 144Hz Gaming Monitor

Wise to do any upgrade or this build can still game for the upcoming Battlefield 2042 game? Thanks so much guys.

You probably better off keeping it till the next interation of hardware comes in.

For amd, despite the x570s is around the corner or rather gigabyte is the first one to sell it in our market. The end of am4 is coming near.

Ddr5 is also coming soon.

Intel side they might have something up their sleeves also.

if ur still happy with its current performance, then i dont see any need to upgrade. if bf2042 doesnt run satisfactorily when u get it, no harm dropping quality presets down a few notches, especially since recent titles generally have diminishing returns wrt quality and performance. in any case, a gpu upgrade is more suitable for ur system, but more likely than not u are going to get ripped off pretty hard in the current market.

I rather you do maintenance for the PC if you have not done for very long.

- Update the BIOS
- Install a clean copy of Windows (Not Windows reset)
- Clean the interior like fans etc.

As well as check if your current SSD/HDD have issue or not.
Or get new SSD/HDD so the PC can continue using.

I don't think your existing rig will have issues playing BF 2042. At least wait till the game is released before deciding whether to upgrade. This is a bad timing to upgrade or buy a new PC, if your existing one is still decent enough.

If you are palying BFV make sure Set Future Frame Rendering to On for higher fps.

It is unknown how well the system will perform on Battlefield 2042 since it is not out.

However, I can confidently say that changing your CPU will give you more fps. You can verify this by comparing benchmark on youtube with 1070 gtx and different cpu.

Thanks for the tips. I’m actually thinking to change the cpu. But if I were to change the cpu to the newest i7 11th gen series, I will also have to change the motherboard too right?
Then I will reuse my gtx1070 for the moment. Will this work fine for the system?

Yes, you need to change mb and potentially your ram as well, I assume your ram speed is low which do affect some fps.
And yes, you could reuse the rest of the components.



You could go intel or amd, whichever budget allow. Do note that intel use 14nm while amd use 7nm, what that means is that intel use more power while amd use less. More power means more heat which means you cannot use stock fan, of course more electricity bill as well.

Thanks for the information. Currently i'm using the normal RAM sticks which you mentioned its the low speed. Any recommendation for RAM that I can change to? In terms of the power = more heat, and results in more electric bill, is there any significant huge different in the bill? Haha

i5 will do fine, i7 wise not all games can support up to 8 cores.
Issue with current gen of Intel CPU is not only heat but the Turbo boost.
Compare with 6th gen/Skylake, for example i5 6600 stock clock is at 3.30GHZ
and turbo is at 3.90ghz so the turbo is around 5%.

Compare with current gen i5 11400 is at 2.90ghz but turbo is up to 4.4ghz.
That is 50% more than previous gen, Turbo speed depends on several
factor like motherboard used.

Which is why I recommend a good motherboard than a cheap one else
the Turbo clock cannot be achieve/sustain due to VRM/Power delivery used on the mobo.
As well as get a better CPU Cooler like BEQUIET SHADOW ROCK 3 $89
so the CPU can sustain the turbo clock.

Alternative you can consider AMD Ryzen, ultimately depend on your budget.

Best change if you have budget as that model is 10 years old.
It can be reused but not sure currently you have any issue like cannot turn on or?

I'm thinking if I want to get a i7-11700 instead of the i5-11400. Which motherboard can I pair it with? Will also probably be getting a cpu fan too. Other than the BEQUIET SHADOW ROCK 3 that was recommended, is there any other that I can consider? Would probably have a budget of $800-$900 to spend.

Currently my casing is the Tecware Alpha. Is there any tweak to make it more nice or stylish. RGB fan? Can it be done?

CPU cooler wise is Cooler Master Hyper 212 series but the Bequiet perform better.

$800- $900 for Intel i7 with motherboard and RAM?
