I got D-Link 323 with the following harddisk .

Western Digital 1TB Caviar Green 64 cache. Model WD10EARS. Installation is simple and no problem with the comparability even though it is not inside the official comparability list.

i have 2 x 1TB WD greens in a DNS323 running RAID 1 and EXT2 file system.
If I upgrade the firmware to 1.08 which introduce support for EXT3 will it affect my HDD? Should I do a backup first?
I want to change the file system to EXT3. What is the procedure?

recommend to use ext2 or ext3 for dns323?

if you are concerned over write-cycle limits especially for the WD Green power drives, then EXT2 is a better choice. There is journalling for EXT3 so there will be much writes going on all the time. This is why for Flash media they prefer EXT2 to preserve life of the thumbdrive.

Back to EXT2 if you use this, please be careful to always do a proper shutdown.
EXT2 has a need to check the file system after an unclean shutdown whereas EXT3 with the journalling can allow sudden shutdown without any problem.

Hi Guys,

I have been trying to telnet into my DNS 323, Firmware 1.08 but doesn't seem to work.

I have follow the http://www.shadowandy.net/2008/05/running-fonzs-fun_plug-05-on-dns-323.htm guide where I copy the 2 files into /VOLUME_1 but I keep getting this on my "Terminal".

-$ telnet 192.168.22.123
Trying 192.168.22.123...
telnet: connect to address 192.168.22.123: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

I also do the port forwarding on my router to enable port 23 and 107.

Anything else that I missed out?

To add on...

After I copy FUN_PLUG file into the VOLUME_1 and restart the NAS, it seems like I can't access the NAS via SMB.

Have tried to shut down the NAS and then reboot it, it gotten the IP from the router DHCP Server but I can only ping the NAS but not access it and telnet in.

I can also access via the web panel, but how can I solve the SMB / Shared Devices portion and get the telnet working for the firmware 1.08?

DNS-323 isn't a good buy and slow in response and laggy from my experience..... I prefer Thecus N2200 with Ajax !! :s12:

AJAX for the web UI? Like I care!

I don't know what you're smoking but most NAS boxes at this price range have a similar throughput. Just because you have it doesn't mean it is better.

Firefly and BT addon for firmware 1.08

Need some help here. I have successfully upgrade my DNS323 firmware to 1.08. I'm getting firmware upload error when I tried to upload Firefly and BT addon. Following is the message I got:

Firmware Upload Error!

The uploaded file was not accepted by the DNS-323. Please return to the previous page and select a valid upgrade file

Any help is very much appreciated.

Bro, at first I also have this issue and trust me, there is nothing wrong with your DNS-323. Basically we need to OPEN OUR EYES and read - it's an ADD-ON. Dlink started with the Add-on thingy from v1.08 onwards. To install the addon, go to your "Advanced"(else could be under "Tools") tab. There should be a "Add-on" inside the left panel that allows you to install the addon.

In case you are using any Network Access control, take note that 1.08 does not support mix privileges. Meaning you cannot have "All account" access and "User access" at the same time. Otherwise, you can ignore this issue.

tnx bro yx200 for your clear instructions.

I had downloaded all the updates but hesitant to make changes since I need to backup my near full HDD b4 attempting a EXT3 file system change or maybe I won't do this cos I'm having the WD greens.
I will do the firmware thing first then. :)
