Use another port . Both ports 80 and 21 are blocked by ISP

Port 80 is blocked by ISP but Port 21 is not block.

It is the 2wire modem issue... I have change the modem to Linksys and have no problem access to my home DNS-323 FTP directly from my office.

Sorry for the noob questions. Just bought a dns-323 and set up for home network backup.
Now I have a problem with my Singtel Mio Router where I couldn't find any setting on port forwarding. Anyone can give some guides in setting up a remote access to NAS? TIA.:)
How to do ftp and ddns set up on Mio 2WIRE router?

Dont waste time on MIO 2wire modem. It had port forwarding feature but it only work in one way direction.

I have tried using D-link and Linksys Gateway Router and had no problem with port forwarding at all.

DNS-323 SetUp on Singtel 2WIRE Modem Router

Yes. Port 80 and 21 are closed checked using www.grc.com as recommended by bro here.

Finally manage to get FTP and DDNS up after many trials and errors.(newbie here)
1. set up port 28 under user-defined application in firewall setting page --> solve FTP
2. change to DHCP client instead of fixed ip --> solve DDNS connection
Now I'm able to access ftp from my office computer via ddns address but still testing out for any other problems.
I'm noob to internet security. Some questions seeking for experts advises:
1. Is there any potential external threats when we run this DNS-323, 24/7 for remote access? Can anyone advise/recommend some protection measures? or is the current firewall from the router good enough?
2. Any other free Backup software would you recommend? I dun like the sw that comes with it.=:p (looking for something like Iomega Automatic Backup Pro, any other nice one)
3. Any other interesting functions we can try on DNS-323 besides Backup, bittorrent, ftp.?
I would like to try on wireless multimedias sharing later.
Thank you.

Got my DNS-323 with two 1TB hard disk raid 1 configuration. Setup UPnP. Now my PS3 can stream my mp3 and videos, damn cool. :)

Btw. For owners for DNS-323, how do you turn off your DNS-323 when u power down your computer? Do you hold the power button before u power down, or can you just switch off the power socket?

DNS-323 quirks

Bought the DNS-323 during Sitex and quite happy with it so far, except for a few quirks.

Direct connection from DNS-323 to MacBook with a Cat5e cable.
Hdd: WD Caviar Black 1TB (Single hdd mode for now, will proceed to RAID-1 later on by adding Samsung F1 1TB)
Firmware: 1.05
Jumbo Frame: DISABLED

I am using only the basic features (file transfer). All the extras like FTP daemon, iTunes server etc are disabled.

Write speed: 15-16 MB/s max
Read speed: ranges from 4 to 8MB/s (horrible!!!)

While the write speed is not impressive for a gigabit network, i guess it is still acceptable and it seems to be a limitation of DNS-323's chipset from what i gather from other forums.
However, the read speed is pathetic and i can't seem to figure the reason for it.

I've tried enabling jumbo frame, using 9000 and 4000 since the network adaptor on the macbook only support these numbers. Unfortunately, that only made the transfer rate worse :(

Doing Backup to DNS-323

Hi, how do u guys do a backup?
1. connect Lan cable directly to DNS-323 or
2. connect Lan cable to router where DNS-323 also connected or
3. using wifi to transfer
I can't connect via 1 & 2, (any advise pls) and with wifi it took me ~8 hrs to backup 17GB datas. Is it slow?:o
Thank you.

I used 2) to backup with my pc connected on gigabit to the router and thereafter nightly backup on incremental basis.

wifi is definitely slowly especially if you have a G router.

usb-storage.ko

just checking if anyone had successfully configured the DNS-323 to support external hdd through the USB port, i had followed the steps from this website: Writings on the wall but was unsuccessful.

i checked using a df command but the external drive does not show up but when i issue a cat /proc/partitions, the external drive shows up as sdb1 (i'm currently running the dns-323 with only one disc) but can't be seen on the windows gui.

the guide above did not include 1)creating a folder where the external drive will show up and 2)mounting the external hdd, could these be the problem?

i had previously used this guide: Attaching USB Storage to the DNS-323 for Linux Newbies & Dummies but was also unsuccessful. I get a Segmentation fault.

my DNS-323 currently runs on ffp 0.5

For those experiencing speed problems, disabling firewall for the NIC may help, esp for those using Vista.

For Vista users, do note that if you play music/videos while doing file transfer, your speed will degrade and go down by > 50% (mine went from 16MB/s down to 6MB/s). This is more apparent for those connected to DNS-323 using UTP cables, and does not affect wifi as much. MS says its a "feature". :s22:

yes. turn on the ftp feature in your dns-323, ensure port is forwarded in your router. I could access my dns-323 from my office using the ddns which I've set up to point to my home IP.

Sometimes depends on your ISP and office if they'd blocked the ports. I could access FTP but not my web GUI (for admin control) from office.

I still can't get the FTP to work. Some said that is due to the 2WIRE modem provided by SingNet, but some is able to do it.

Btw, anyone knows how to set the web server port to 8080 ?

I placed my web admin page on port 81.
