Got my DNS-323 with two 1TB hard disk raid 1 configuration. Setup UPnP. Now my PS3 can stream my mp3 and videos, damn cool. :)

Btw. For owners for DNS-323, how do you turn off your DNS-323 when u power down your computer? Do you hold the power button before u power down, or can you just switch off the power socket?

i leave it 24/7 since 2008Feb on 1.05 firmware (i do restart it probably once a month to test something)

I was in a updating mood today and updated my DNS-323 from 1.03 to 1.05. Now files can't be opened or copied. Some files are ok while others seem unusable. I see everything when I access it.

What did I do wrong?

How can I recover my files?

Thanks for the help.

wrong? hmm... you did not backup your 323 files before the firmware upgrade. :)

anyway, you could mount the drive to winXP and download some drivers to read it.
or, telnet to dns323 and unmount the drive and perform some disk check..

Hi, can a user change his new password access to his private folder only to himself i.e. even the administrator cannot change. For personal privacy? If yes, pls anyone advise me how to do it. Thank you.

Is it normal to have the 323 become inaccessible if I leave it to idle? And to wake up must wait quite long.

nope.

even if it idle, u will still be able to access it.

to wake up takes around 3 to 5 secs depending on ur harddisk

If you are accessing the disk contents, you need to wait for the disk for spin up. If you don't wish this from happening, you can disable the turn off hard disk feature in disk management. How long does it take to be responsive depends on your hard disk.

Unless the person has at least shell access, then he can use the passwd command to change the new password (if I am not wrong)

The super user(root) have full access to everything. Only way to prevent root from reading is to encrypt your data beforehand, then store there, and view the data separate from the DNS-323(e.g on your own laptop and decrypted on the laptop).

For normal user, you can have different user and password, only the administrator can do this.Just use the DNS-323 webpage->advanced for simple configuration(also only can be done by the administrator). For user to do it, root need to allow shell access(via Telnet or ssh) and you just run passwd to change password.(Don't know if it persist across DNS-323 reboots since I have not tried it)

what i did was:
1) plug out all hdds, plug in only the new hdd, let it format
2) plug in the new hdd on the right and the old hdd on the left
3) cp -avr /mnt/HD_a2/* /mnt/HD_a4/*
4) put new hdd on left, right side whatever else you want

Can anyone tell me where physicall is HD_a4 and HD_b4? Is it a separate partition in the HDD or in the memory in the DNS-323.

Previously (older firmware) with 500GB, I only see HD_a2 and HD_b2. Recently when I move to 1TB, then I see them.

Sorry if this has been answered before but if the enclosure fails, can we just plug the HDD back into a new enclosure and still access the data?

Yes you can just plug the hard disk back to a new 323 or plug the hard disk directly to your computer and install ext2fs software to view your hard disk.

It is a known bug in fw1.05.. the problem will be fix in fw1.06. The hdd is formatted at 94%. Just restart the nas. It has happened to me and both my hdds are working well.
