Its definately lower than a PC. And depending on the kind of hdd u use. Im using WD Green so its quite power saving. And i doubt it will use much power.

Anyway, can i use Filezillar FTP client to access my files on my dns when im in sch. Anyone tried doing that?

hey guys, i'm interested in getting a 323. planning to let it run 24/7 or at least run while i'm sleeping. how's the noise level compared to a normal pc? i dont mean comparing to those hi performance silent cpu fan/psu.

i'm sensitive to noise when i sleep hence the question. anyone? :)

Definately a PC left on is noisier den the 323. The only noise most of the time is the fan, but it only comes on when at certain temperature. When its not running, it's pretty quiet. Get the WD Green HDD, its low on noise.

And the only concern is the really bright BLUE lights, but you'll get used to it after some time. I do not put it into hibernation thus the blue lights never dim.

The 323 and the WD Green is a nice match. No point getting those high end HDD, like WD Black since the bottleneck is in the throughput.

As for ftp, there are too many factors that cause it not to work. Office and home firewall, port blocking etc. But I have managed to ftp into my home DNS-323 before, using SNBB, setting a different port and dyndns. The client is located in my office DMZ.

i managed to ftp back to my dns when im outside using wireless sg. But im not sure if in school with regards to port, firewall and those stuff.

If i cant ftp in school, it pretty much defeats the purpose of the dns. Is there a way out of it?

If it is your school's security that is blocking your access to your DNS-323. You can't really blame your school. You can always bring laptop and subscribe to mobile broadband service to access your DNS-323.

Can always try to contact your NYP's network administrators. They would have the answers you need.

If you are on 10/100mbps network, bottleneck would refer to the network switch.

Throw in a old sata harddisk that gives low read/write and the bottleneck would be harddisk.

If you run crazy amount of daemon on the device, bottleneck might be cpu or ram or disk i/o.

if you run hard disk in single mode, bottleneck might be the harddisk throughput.

if you run hard disk in raid 1 mode, bottleneck might be cpu/ram as it replicates each bit

if you run hard disk in raid 0 mode, bottleneck might be cpu/ram as it needs additional cpu cycle for reading and writing.

There are other bottlenecks in different scenario.

Which bottleneck are you referring to?

it's pretty quiet. I don't ever hear anything. Lots of other ambience noise is louder. Even the birds outside make more noise.

The temperature is normal. Operating temperature range is 5 to 55 deg.

yea i know 44 deg is normal, but how come the fan comes on at this temp? and it comes on very regularly. i thought the fan only kicks in at 46 according to what i know (43(OFF), 46(LOW), 49(HIGH).

The price for the DNS 323 is pretty stable.
Last IT show priced @ $209 FIXED (the most give you some lousy free gift)

Last 2 IT Show got drop until $199....

The price is pretty stable :(
Maybe I'll just buy a DNS423 rather then 323, however 423 firmware for BT is not out yet.

sigh

Not going into the components, the DNS-323 has an effective throughput of 20MB/s. This is already very generous.

An FE will be the bottleneck since FE theoretical top speed is 12.5MB/s. In reality, you cannot hit 10MB/s. Thus DNS-323 needs GE.

Gen 1 SATA disk can comfortably push out 40MB/s under real life situiation. Thus a WD Green is more than comfortable for a DNS-323. In fact if there are cheap low power 5400rpms HDD, that would be good enough too.
