DVD recorder phased out ?

My Sony DVD recorder hard disk just crashed. Shopping for a new one.
To my surprise, DVD recorder is obsolete and i can't get a new one ! So what do have people nowadays use to record TV shows ?

- I don't use singtel or starhub recordable set top box because didn't subscribe and a hassle to archive to DVD disc anyways.
- media players like ACryan, amconics, uraku, asus, etc all do not have a proper analogue TV tuner.

Please advise what equipment you guys have been using to record TV shows ?

oh no, as i write, i have just found out that dvd recorders are indeed obsolete and there are no replacements. sad. the days of VCR and DVD recorders to archive your favourite tv shows are over. we are back to stone age, thanks to the copy write bodies. sigh

i saw DVD recorder still selling at Giant.. cant remember the brand, could be Philips. But anyway since i started using Hubstation, never bother to record and archive TV shows. Just dont see the need anymore. There are other ways to catch those shows like youtube, xinmsn or torrents.

i still have a new VCR which was bought after my Sony VCR died.. until today its never used.

I still have archives of comedies like Happy Days and World Cup 86 etc on tape which are more than 20years old and still watchable. But my DVD archives of 1994 world cup all turned bad and gone forever. And now I cannot even archive my TV programmes. It's really sad to see that we have "progressed" so much.

youtubes are really low rez and surely worst than tapes

I use ACryan to recorded TV show using video output from my TV. You don't have to route antena to your media player to record TV show for your infomation.

If you go around BEST , Courts , Harvey Norman , Gain City and Audio House etc ...likely can see Samsung and LG DVD Hard Disk recorder ...But Mega also saw they selling Panasonic DVD Hard Disk recorder clearing stock.

Only the Panasonic can record to DL DVD blank disc ...both LG and Samsung only can record to SL DVD blank disc.

Pioneer and Philips DVD hard disk recorder ...no where in sight....

I got the ACRyan Model PV75100 which has a Hybrid Analog/Digital Tuner as replacement for my Pioneer HDD recorder.

But I think it is not longer in production. Not sure if SLS still has old stock for this model. It's getting hard to find a Hybrid Analog/Digital Tuner recorder as most are just digital tuner recorder.

using output from your TV that means your TV should turn on every time you record. With antenna you can set timing, no need to turn on TV.

HDD cum DVD recorder

Is it my imagination or do HDD cum DVD recorders no longer exist in the market? A few years back I bought a Pioneer DVR-550H-S and frequently recorded programmes on the HDD, did some editing (e.g. deleting unwanted scenes) and then burning on a DVD-R disc.

Recently my neighbour's super old VCR conked so he asked me how was my recorder. I told him it costed about $600 back then but I felt it was worth every cent. So he went to visit Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG and Pioneer websites and found none of them listed HDD cum DVD recorders.

I thought he overlooked so I too visited the websites and sure enough, its not there. There are DVD players and Blu-ray players but no HDD cum DVD recorders.

Are these players already extinct? :s31: And if so then how can my cousin record his shows? Starhub's set top boxes don't last very long and each time I swap my HD Hubstation I lose everything so recording on the set top box doesn't make sense. And he does not want to use a VCR any more. So what options are open to him seeing that HDD cum DVD recorders appear to be extinct?

Thanks. I can link it to my Starhub Hubstation HD and then record cable TV stuff from the set top box to the ACRyan for exporting?

Is this sold in any PC shop in Funan/Sim Lim?

if u are IT/DIY PC savvy:

you can slap up a HTPC using used and even something like the integrated graphics on a 780G motherboard from 2008 would be good to go for playback and add in hdd, DVDRW optical and a TV card/video capture device can be a very cheap solution :D You have option of upgrading to blu ray drive, codecs, discrete graphics card, etc and it wun become obsolete anytime soon
