Thanks for your replies.

Below are more "standard" rules of this friend that i would like to clarify also:

1) Why is it that if a person calls pong, shows his pong tiles, he cannot cancel and take back. But in the case of chi, can take back after showing?

2) Normally, if someone throws the winning tiles, he pays double. But for special sets like shi san yao, da si xi etc, her rule is that everyone will pay double. Technically, no difference from zhi mo. Her rational is because these are special sets. Only got to know about this rule when she threw a hong zhong for me to win shi san yao. Other players were saying they should not need to pay double, but she insist that this is the standard rule.

3) normally, if we throw a big tile which results in a player getting 5 tai or more, the person who throws need to bao. By her rule, in the case where a person already has 5 tai (eg. 5 tai for flowers and animals), if another player throws a big tile and this person HU as eyes, the thrower also has to bao. My understanding is that only if the big tile results in another tai, then need to bao, which is not the case for eyes.

Are any of the above standard rules for you?

No right no wrong.

You wanna play at her house just accept her house rules.

Alternatively, just play at your house and set your own rules.

I have a friend's house, if I bite other player's flower, that player must pay me.

And also at the start of the game, 4 of us will shuffle and choose random animal. If we draw that animal during the game, we get paid too.

For pong and chi, I teach you a tip - unless you are absolutely sure of calling for pong, chi or hu, otherwise just say "wait a minute" instead. Then think carefully before you commit to your next action.

Because some players are strict about it and insist that the moment you show your tiles, you must follow through the actions.

1. Once you show your tiles, you cannot take back. It's MJ etiquette.

2. This one is house rule. If all agree that for special hands, all pay double, then double.

3. Depends on house rule also.

It's good sport to come to a mutual understanding prior to playing to prevent disputes/confusion.

Tile efficiency lor

Those beginner ppl play mj throw middle tile at start of the hand i really scratch head
前辈, if this middle tile happens to be lone ranger with no link with others, any suggestion to keep until how many rds of 摸牌?

And also, if must discard between middle tiles say 34567 or DNXB ZFB, in this situation whats the best options?

At least float for the first 6 tiles and throw lone 19 or zi pai first

Roger! But hor, im more keen to learn how to learn/guess which tile the 3 opponent want. Like smaller or upper number or which type they are waiting for...

I know some season one can guess what tiles people want...

You focus on tile efficiency first
Of course your xia jia eat 2 times same color
Or pong hong zhong fa cai
You dont throw bai ban or that color suite

This xia jia eat 2 times same color, usually i wont throw the one they want anymore. Then when they hu, sometime is just rojak inside. This type how to judge ah? How to proceed? Or once these situation happens, if i 1-2 tai nia, start guarding and if i 3-5 tai, then cheong?
