I'm no saint—I treat myself to fancy stuff once in a while. 'fancy' is a moving target. A billionaire’s fancy is $200 million; the man on the street’s fancy is an ATAS café coffee.

Always remember - Peace of mind comes from not letting someone else’s baseline define yours.
As you can older, fancy stuff becomes simpler. A walk in a quiet temple in Japan can be fancy, trying some street food u have nvr tried before can also be fancy. Point is, being fancy is just a temporary escape from the mundane, but for some it needs to be extremely expensive and ig worthy

Well said.
I guess fancy is the wrong word for it.
Something deeply meaningful, enjoyable, satisfying, fulfilling, enriching, rewarding, soulful, nourishing, and life-affirming.

And you know what? That kind of thing money may not be able to even buy!

yes. i think u mean simple stuff can be become fancy to us. our goal post on determining enjoyable/fancy stuff shifts.

simplicity at its best to enjoy stuff. too complicated ingredient may spoil the soup.

also complicated stuff need more time to prepare, means u have less time to enjoy.

the 'Purpose' needs not to be big or complicated.

The most basic is to be able to wake up without alarm clock, and to sleep at anytime you want (for those whose children have already grown up or left home).

I don't need the zero capital gains tax.

There are also other accounts like TFSA and RRSP that have no tax in capital gains. It's a little complicated so I won't go into details.
I look up TFSA. There is a contribution limit of $7k per year. It will take forever to reach $1M just for tax avoidance.
Some of these schemes sound great, but not possible to do tax avoidance in reality, one needs to be actually working and living for decades in Canada.
In the end, retaining Singapore tax-residence will be the most realistic option for most normal retirees < $5M (not the super-rich retirees >$10M).

Thread for discussions related to retirement.

Come share what you are doing in retirement.
Food. Travels. Activities. Fitness. Health.
Also can discuss how you were able to retire. Money. Investments.

Realized there isn't really a thread in EDMW on this topic specifically.
It's the day......edmw has become so old...that people are discussing retirement.

The young ones are all on Reddit

That's why Canada is not a place you retire to. It can work if you migrate to Canada when you are younger.

I am not selling Canada as a destination to retire to by the way. Of course not.

Anyway the bulk of my post was to debunk that capital gains tax on $300k capital gains is $80k. Probably half that for retirees. And if retiree is going to realize so much in a single year they probably don't know how to manage taxes.

Why bother about teenagers and 20 year olds? They have their own priorities in life. Let them be.

Saw this diagram on linkedin. SG rank the highest cost to retire. You should start to worry about $20 hawker food in future.

so sharing here:

Fall is coming. Larch season just beginning. Some Larch trees have begun to turn golden yellow but not quite.
Last weekend to hike at Sunshine Meadows before they close to prepare for ski season probably mid Nov opening.

Pretty good sushi prepared by Japanese Chefs. Surprised to find them in Banff of all places.
