Saw this CNA story about a former semiconductor engineer who retired at 54.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/today/up-close/sg60-retired-engineer-entrepreneur-outdoors-5279566

This retired engineer has mobility issues but at 60 is still hustling through his second act in life

After leaving a high-pressure career, Juraimi Rahmat's retirement has been anything but slow. From starting businesses to taking up a diploma, the 60-year-old Singaporean believes in keeping his mind active and contributing to society.

But interestingly, retirement for him didn’t mean just stop work and do nothing. He and his wife left full-time employment, then spent their time doing small businesses, studying and pursuing other interests.

I think this is actually quite an interesting way to look at retirement.

Maybe retirement doesn’t have to mean no more work.

Maybe it just means no longer needing to work.

Once money is no longer the main issue, you can still choose to work — but only on things you like, at your own pace, without worrying so much about salary, promotion, office politics or whether your boss is happy.

Want to work 1–2 days a week? Can.

Want to start some small business and see how? Can.

Want to study something, volunteer, travel more, or just take it easy for a while? Also can.

To me, there is quite a big difference between:

Working because you have to

vs

Working because you want to

Maybe that kind of “work optional” stage is actually a better goal than completely stopping work.

If tomorrow you had enough money to retire, would you really stop working completely?

Or would you still want to do some part-time work, business, consulting etc — just on your own terms?

Many people say, once you retire. You start to die.

The mind slow down. The body move less. Money spend more.
No more challenge.

Unlike when you are still working. Keep your body and mind sharp.

Congrats!
Hope it is really soon!
What you planning to do with that freedom?
spend months in a year away from SG... do country hoping and see some parts of the world.

rest of the time, probably promote an art gallery, and business advisory.

lazy days, play some game (good for the brain). :)

Depends how old and frail you are when you retire.

If retire younger like 30-50 usually spend more money but body more fit and can do more things.

Retire in 70-80s then yes more frail slow and do less. Also spend less not more.

There's a case for doing some work optionally to keep things interesting on the work and financial side of things.

Can be landlord manage tenants if you enjoy that. Or be Angel investor help startups. Or consulting work. Board member. Directorships.

Not full time but up to you when you want to do some work.

Other things would be to find interesting activities you enjoy

Try new things
New food. New restaurants.

Seems like the common theme for retirees to spend significant time outside of Singapore.

Promoting art gallery sounds like a very niche area of expertise. Interesting.

the travelling part will help inspire the contents of the art gallery. its not those fine art kinda thing though... and after covering cost, any remaining to be donated to charity.

Usually retirement means will laze around. Sit at home watch all the drama and movie. Do nothing. Eat all the junk food.
Nope.
I do workout with dumbbells kettlebell calisthenics rowing biking in my basement gym. While watching TV.

Enjoy good food but also exercise well.

Spend time in nature. Hiking. Skiing.

Do some work when I want. Go on short trips to various parts of the country and Internationally.
