Earlier in the morning was trying out the 5G network in MRT underground, 5G drop to NSA at EWL - travelling to Outram park station

At TEL - Outram Park station

Anyway, managed to receive sms when in 5G NSA network, so could be my phone issue (POCO F4) cant support sms in 5G SA mode.

What 4G speed do we expect or can consider as acceptable from the Telco based on your experience?

My recent 4G speed test results using Singtel SIM Only are all over the places.

Therefore I do not have high hopes for 4G. Anything above 100 Mbps is excellent. Anything above 50 Mbps is good. Anything above 25 Mbps is acceptable. But idle latency should not be too high as well.

Reference: recent test results using SingTel SIM Only Plan and 4G

Low: Orchard MRT, luckily still can browse HWZ forum at that time.

This morning I find out Eight 4G is better than SingTel 4G in some weak signal areas in my work place.

So it all depends on the location.

The ultimate test for Eight 4G will be the North South MRT in CBD areas. Let's see how it goes.

My hops for 5G is of course higher, even though the test results are also all over the places.

5G SA:
Anything above 500 Mbps is excellent.
Anything above 250 Mbps is good.
Anything above 100 Mbps is acceptable.
Anything above 50 Mbps is bearable.

But idle latency should not be too high as well.

Location: Jurong Point, JP2 B1, where M1, StarHub and SingTel shop are close to each other.

Time: Tuesday afternoon, around 6:40 pm

Findings:

1) Both Eight 4G and SingTel 4G have 4G+ (4G LTE-A) connection, 20MHz+20MHz bandwidth.

2) Eight 4G has better signal level consistently, "Great" signal level as per NetMointor app, SingTel 4G signal is not bad but vary from "Great" to "Good".

3) SingTel 4G has faster download speed but somehow slow upload. Eight 4G has lower download speed but faster upload speed. Both do not have great speed though, maybe due to certain level of congestion on the 4G network.

SpeedTest results for today, done in Jurong Point and nearby HDB open area.

For the HDB open area, Singtel 5G SA Speed is just for reference (I can get even >1G bps at this area). My main goal is to compare Singtel 4G versus Eight 4G.

Even in this area, Eight 4G signal is also similar to Singtel 4G signal level but somehow the test result is much slower.

All in all, Eight 4G signal is often stronger or the same as Singtel 4G signal, but the download speed tends to be much slower. On the other hand, in relatively congested area like Jurong Point (kind of peak hours), Singtel 4G upload speed can be very slow.

eight speed is definitely being throttled

Indeed, like Simba. This is fair enough since they charge reasonable plan fee. As long as the connection is stable, rather than giving high speed but roller coaster connection. After all, technically, 10Mbps is good enough for almost all forms of data usage except big file download. 😅

1. Not sure if throttled the right word to use here.

I think not purposely throttled, but rather due to limit of capacity allocated among the network.

StarHub networks tiers: not counting the three MVNOs: redONE, Cuniq and MyRepublic 5G.

5G networks
1) StarHub mobile plans with devices
2) StarHub Star SIM Only plans
3) giga 5G
4) Eight 5G

4G networks
1) giga 4G
2) Eight 4G

So Eight 4G is probably at the lowest food chain here.

2. On the other hand, SingTel 4G and M1 4G will probably have similar capacity allocation issues as well. M1 4G coverage is also known to be worse than SingTel/StarHub. (M1 shares 5G Infrastructure with StarHub so the 5G coverage should be the same as StarHub).

3. Indeed coverage and stable speed are more important than speed. Stable 10 Mbps should be good enough.

4. Orchard MRT underground (inside train or at the platform) during peak hours may seem to be one of the ultimate test to carry out based on the reports. I get low speed below 5 Mbps and unstable, and I was not really testing at peak hours but rather at around 3:15 pm on a Saturday afternoon. On the other hand, I could browse Internet and read HWZ forum without issues.

Probably bandwidth not sufficient to allocate a decent amount to every 8 user.. like for example used to be 1 bowl of rice for 1 person.. now 1 bowl has to share with 11 ppl..

Agreed, speed limit should be more appropriate, throttled speed will be those below 0.5Mbps kinda speed. 😂

Just want to share my current roaming experience in HK at the airport area.

SMC HK

Speed and signal quality is good.
However keep getting airplane mode.
Full signal 5G and no internet.
I’ll have to switch airplane mode on and off.
Multiple times an hour.

Is 8 internet service coming soon?

I tested 8 at Batam central area not bad, speed is not fast at a few mbps but manageable for smooth internet and whatsapp. Travel by boat to Batam almost reach Batam shoreline still can access 8 under Starhub.
