Lastly since the 5G plans were introduced, some on 4G plans reported no longer getting 5G while roaming.
I don't think we have enough data points to be sure, but that is something to look out for.

This is interesting. I will try to test this for my upcoming one-week trip to Fujian Province, China.

Eight S$8 4G plan (Starhub 4G network) -- China Mobile
CUniq S$9,9 4G plan (Starhub network) -- China Unicom
SIMBA S$12 plan -- China Telecom

You are using 2 phones with 3 eSIM?

Two Poco X7 Pro phones with 4 physical SIM cards, Singtel SIM Only without China Roaming data, plus the above-mentioned three physical SIM cards. Poco X7 Pro does not support eSIM.
Eight S$8 4G plan (Starhub 4G network) -- China Mobile, 3GB China roaming data, free voice roaming.
CUniq S$9,9 4G plan (Starhub network) -- China Unicom, 20G China roaming data.
SIMBA S$12 plan -- China Telecom, 18GB China roaming data, free voice roaming.

I do not think I need so much data, just for testing.

BTW, I will also try out the LinkLAN eSIM adapter + giga travel eSIM -- still a physical Sim to the phone. The roaming partner is probably the same as giga (China Mobile + China Unicom. This is just for testing. giga travel eSIM is not cheap, 5 day 3GB at S$7, 5 day 5GB at S$9.70, 30 days 10GB at S$18.70, etc).

giga eSIM for China, from giga Shopee store, at S$1.86
Order Summary
Order Date: 06 December 2025
Plan Purchased: China 1GB 5 days pack
Expiry Note: Plan expires in 90 days after purchase.
For Android Devices (ensure APN is set to SHWAP):
SM-DP+ Address: shb.prod.ondemandconnectivity.com

It is not a placebo effect.

Eight 4G is now often pretty slow. On the other hand, Eight 5G should be much faster.

I have compared Eight 4G (S$8) and StarHub Prepaid S 5G (S$10 usual price, S$3 for some users migrated from Happy Prepaid Card). The speed difference is very significant.
I just tested eight 4g on my friends S25 and eight 5g on my oppo find n5, his 4G actually slightly faster than mine, maybe cos of location 😁

In case people don't believe the FAQ, I share my real life experience.

My current billing cycle is due on 5 Dec 2025. I am going overseas next week. On 4 Dec morning, I perform the 'recharge' function on the Eight App and choose 5G plan for 14.80. Immediately received confirmation. Switch off phone and restart. Immediately get 5G connection. Today on 5 Dec, I log into Eight App and perform Recharge again. This time round, I selected my previous plan of 8 Dollarts. Immediately confirmed and say that the new plan will be active on my next billing cycle on 4 Jan 2026. Meaning I am on 5G until 3 Jan 2026.

What I did is
I travel on 15 Oct, my $8 plan due on 16 Oct 2359.
16 Oct, I was at oversea, I upgrade to $18. It change immedidately.
Before new cycle come in on 15 Nov, I change my recharge back to $8.
It return to $8 on 16 Nov.

If you plan to change plan oversea, you need to take note of the time zone different.
Eight follow Singapore time.

IMHO.
The mobile phone also makes a difference - Singtel 4G, S25U can achieve 494 464 Mbps down while A25 only 290 Mbps.

Corrected - Typo

My current monthly plan ends on 10 Dec and I manually recharged today. The SMS indicated that my new plan will expire on 7 January. Doesn't the new plan automatically take effect from 10 Dec after the current plan expire?

Nothing about this in their FAQ?

To play safe maybe in future just top up the wallet and turn on Auto Recharge.

CUniq - this one has much more roaming data in dragonland than CMlink sia...

Just wondering how you get the "2.25X more" number?

Nominal it is one of the following:
14.8/8 = 1.75
14.8/11.8 = 1.25

But I understand the users here are very good at finding lobangs and can get the S$8 plan at lower price including the top-up offer to make it S$4 per month.

Not sure what is the best price for the S$11.8, S$14.8 and S$18 plan (without using methods like Shopee Coins).

how to get it at $4 per month?
