Giga can receive incoming sms in 230 countries. What about Eight?
Can Eight do the same? Anyone can share?

Eight can only receive incoming sms when you have data roaming?
(Giga states explicityly that one can get incoming sms even when there is no data roaming in the country).

  1. You should be able to receive SMS text messages wherever you’re on a Wi-Fi connection (with public Internet access) and have VoWifi (“Wifi Calling”) activated.
  2. You should be able to receive SMS text messages wherever you can roam onto a 2G or 3G network — even if the data network connection is 4G or 5G, or there’s no data service.
  3. You should be able to receive SMS text messages wherever you can roam onto a 4G or 5G network with VoLTE or VoNR support. These networks are explicitly listed in Eight’s roaming guide.
Delivery of SMS text messages is never guaranteed. Not even on your home network. Don’t rely exclusively on SMS text messages for safety of life matters, for example.

Eight list of country with roaming data is long, only behind Simba, so far never encounter a situation where I don't get roaming data. But if you have VoWifi turned on, as long as you have wifi or another sim with working data, you get backup calling which will also receive SMS.

that is actually the primary use case for Wifi Calling for me.

SMS for home network works without VoLTE, I would suspect that if you don't have roaming data, then likely you would be facing a roam failure, and in that case, a discussion about receiving SMS is moot.

It’s possible your phone will still register on a 2G or 3G network (or on a 4G or 5G network with 2G or 3G fallback) even in a country/territory that Eight doesn’t explicitly list. One reason is that Eight may change its roaming partners at any time before publishing an updated list. If so, you’ll probably get incoming SMS text messages. No guarantees, of course.

The 2G and 3G networks are starting to shut down, but lots of places still have them and will for some time to come.

Always have some sort of basic “Plan B,” even in Singapore. It’s possible for StarHub’s network to go offline for a period of time.

2G & 3G availability is totally dependent on the country in question, many have shutdown one or the other but have kept one of them going, but most have plans to shut them down totally. So while this might be an option, it is coming to an end, so I do see Wifi calling as a more reliable option.

As for plan B, I strongly agree with that, I usually have another sim from a different telco in the phone.
And also important to have plan C, to cope with a situation where no mobile service is available.
So many are so heavily dependent on mobile services that they can't function if it is gone.
