I’m roaming in China now. Auto connect to CM network with 4G. Experience is smooth & silky. Today is my $8 plan last day, gonna upgrade to the $18 tonight.

i go to china i prefer to buy a cmlink $21 plan (new no) just to use for the travel period, becos it comes with 30GB of roaming data to be used in china and hk. i can cancel before the renewal after coming back from china.

china even wifi also not usable for whatsapp, facebook, youtube etc. so the 30GB roaming data is very useful and no need to worry that not enough.

One main advantage for Eight and SIMBA over CMLink and CUniq is free voice roaming which can be useful.

BTW, CUniq S$14.9 4G plan seems to offer more China data than CMLink S$21 5G plan.

I just saw this below updated list on 11/11/2025 for VoLTE calls. Can anyone confirm that I can call to and from Vietnam and also also make local calls within Vietnam? If so, I am planning to switch from Simba to Eight as Simba cannot make free IDD calls to Vietnam.

Vietnam should be covered.

  • Does roaming covers calls and SMS?
Absolutely! Our plans include 288 minutes of roaming calls—whether you’re calling back to Singapore or making local calls in the country you’re visiting.
    • To ensure smooth calling, check the “Network Operator (VoLTE Calls)” column in our roaming guide.
    • For example: In Malaysia, connect to MAXIS/UMOBILE/CELCOM to enjoy VoLTE calls and stay in touch with home.
    • For SMS, there will be no issues to receive OTP, but our plans do not include outgoing international SMS at the moment.
  • What is an IDD call? Where can I use my IDD?
International direct dialling (IDD) calls let you connect to overseas numbers directly. Enjoy all-inclusive IDD Talktime with your overseas friends with our IDD talktime:
    • IDD Supported Destinations:
Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, China, Colombia, Guam, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Romania, Taiwan, Thailand, USA – Alaska, USA – Hawaii, USA – United States Of America, USA – Virgin Islands, Vietnam

Ahhh. Once I switch to zero1 5g, can compare the difference.
Btw today is my last day for eight 5G, tomorrow downgraded to 4G haha

After I got 5G, still getting 4G connections on and off whatever color I use.
If it comes free or maybe $2 extra I don't mind, but no going to pay more for it.
Case in point, I am still on eight $8 plan.

Guess this is why Eight 5G at S$14.8 minimum is not that popular even though 5G speed can be much faster when 5G works.

Not sure the bundle pricing of Eight Home Internet plus Eight 5G plans can help the adoption of Eight 5G plans.

I only have Eight S$8 4G plan. But I tested StarHub Prepaid S 5G (S$10 per month, converted from StarHub Happy Prepaid card) and the speed at home was very fast.

u did not get my point. i said i temperaily use the CMLink plan (new no) during the travel period only. it is not meant to replace my eight main line.

but just purely to pay the least but get the most possible roaming data use in china.

seriously speaking, for mobile users, high speed test does not necessary mean a lot to users on the move, becos the things one can do on mobile phone itself is rather limited.

what can one do frequently on a mobile phone that requires so high bandwidth. To watch a 4k youtube streaming only requires 20Mbps minimum.

the usefulness of 5G vs 4G is the main difference will be latency only which 5G has lower latency which is technically better for gaming on the move. But seriously even in lion city, the so called "on the move" latency of 5G is no way consistent. One may be able to enjoy low latency 5G gaming at a spot that is known to be good. However, no way one can enjoy consistent low latency 5G gaming while "on the move" especially on MRT. Anyone who has played latency sensitive game will know this. For those who played such game, will know that a short moment of hike in latency can cause the gaming experience to drop until very jialat and lost a game. I personally played such games previously, i know and I will wait until i reached home then played using fibre broadband wifi instead.

This is why I hardly feel that it is worthwhile to spend extra on 5G while even u do a normal stuff like web surfing or youtube streaming, the inconsistency of coverage, speed and latency while on the move of 5G (at least for now) is also not going to make any big real life difference for normal users.

Good news for eight user roaming in Malaysia! Now all 3 telcos support 5g roaming. Umobile even support 5G SA roaming in JB! If you notice you telco name become UM ULTRA 5G mean you are under 5G SA network.

dun expect too much on this.

eight if u roam to maxis, it has 5G long time ago, but in real life, the amount of time, u can be on 5G is super limited.

even for celcom or u mobile will be the same.

Difference between 4G & 5G speed in my house, tampines
4G - Download: 293; upload: 8.03
5G - Download: 13.5; upload: 0.99

5G requires 4 times more cell towers to cover than 4G. It is obvious than most indoor the 5G coverage is actually quite poor still not to mention in MRT etc.

this is the reason why although 5G technically has better speed than 4G but in real, a lot of time it may not make very big difference to most users.

previously malaysia only got DNB which provide 5g coverage to all the telco. UM now is building the second 5G network in Malaysia under 5G SA protocol. that mean less congested and double 5g network to cover for DNB blindspot.
