If you're armed with only a general biz degree, it would be very much be dependent on your personality and dynamism to get you any where, otherwise, when you do not have that instrinsic personal quality, it is just a 'piece of paper' with not much substantive value."

That's the beauty of a biz degree.

It's general, not much skill required and ordinary but it gets you the unlimited pay.

Plus .... the best part of a biz degree is that you will be working downtown where all the pretty ladies are ..... unless you want to slog through your whole life in dusty and dirty industrial areas working with cheap FW (you don't even get to work with FTs, needless to say pretty girls), go for Engineering.

as it seems, the biz degree has been oversold & overhyped. not many people really get super-high pay, it's only a myth. perhaps u could get quite decent pay, that's all, and the coolest thing is working alongside babes... lol haha

I believe it is not fair to say that in a general business degree, NOT much skill is required and you will DEFINITELY get unlimited pay. And if everyone thinks the same way as you do, everyone would be flocking to study business and you will face the same thing all over again like in engineering: Competition for jobs in the finance sector. Only this time, you will not only be fighting with the FTs (there are also some of them in the finance sector; don't rule them out!), but also your own people.

( P.S. the pretty girls part is a fact though... :p )

This topic has always been discussed to death and again, let me offer my views.

In singapore context, it's always better to have a specialised degree in engineering, law, medicine or accountancy. In these fields, starting pay is decent and you will see a improvement in salary as you get rewarded for your experience and expertise. These fields do not offer you the starting 8K that SMU loves to showcase in newspaper for it's business graduates, but they will get you your condo by age 35 if you work hard. They are also more recession proof and in some fields it can be considered an iron-rice bowl.

Business/finance course seem to be popular because it seemed to be able to confer quick riches on people but there is nothing free in this world. Those grads who get 8K starting are few, and they work like **** , probably burning out by early 30s. Talent is also needed and employers are quick to let go those who cannot make the mark.

The thing about the engineering field is that there is a lot of variety and depth for someone who puts in the effort to excel in. You can be a master of your trade and you will be rewarded for that.

I have an fellow engineer who is a mechanical engineer by training. After working for a few years in a large MNC overseeing projects, he gain enough experience to set up a company putting up scaffolds. He can do it faster, taller, cheaper and safer than most of the veterans in the industry after observing and learning from the many companies that he had work with. It's not something terribly exciting but it showcase the extreme variety of opportunities avaliable.

The engineer's job isn't really about doing programing, solving cheem equations all day long which tends to bore the **** out of most student ( me included). Those stuff you learn in school might just be future tools you use in your daily work, but what most engineers really utilise when working is an application of common sense, ingeunity, communication , diligence and just ocassionally, that cheem equation/concept.
I guess studying biz/finance is more exciting becuase of the involvement of real examples showing fascinating amount of money or case studies of succesful marketing. But really, where as far as biz/finance is concern , the excitment really ends at studying. You are not likely to get involved in huge M&As, do a succesful marketing blizz for Loreal when you graduate ( at least not so soon) or pick a winning investment. On the other hand, I studied none of the exciting engineering projects but to date, in my 4.5 years of engineering life, i've handle roughly $5 million worth of project with an estimated return at about 4 times the value anually. In a sense, i guess i am the businessman for my company, being able to understand the technology, see an opportunity, convince my management to do my project, design the thing and get people to build it.

The riches in banking/investment might be higher but very few people are able to do something different that lets them stay at the top of the game. Most folks are normal back office workers.

I know studying engineering is difficult and we have many threads of people who complain of the lack of interest or some engineers condemning the life of an engineer, but really, these guys are already losers whatever they do or study.

And the fact is , studying engineering might not be as difficult as what some contributors had said

I agree with cozycatus. My friends told me I was crazy when I continued with engineering after poly. I come from a background of engineers in my family, but I wasn't coerced into doing engineering. I was really interested in engineering and that is why I continued in this field of study. Also, I do not like to be in a office environment. I prefer a more hands on and practical environment. Yes, I agree that it is not exactly easy to study engineering. But since when is studying easy. You don't put in effort anywhere you go, you die. It is as simple as that. It is not like, eh business degree damn easy leh. I go in don't need to study also can score. There is nothing free in this world, you get what you deserved.

And for milo178, I kind of suspect that you are a engineer going through a mid life crisis. Well, if you know how to innovate and be creative there is bound to be a way out.

Getting a engineering degree doesn't mean you have to be a engineer. At the end of the day, what you choose what you want to be. Nobody can decide on YOUR future other than YOURSELF.

Pls study Engineering only if Engineering is your passion. Else...

1. Today's news - Engineer who lost job throws pot from flat. And he's a cheap FT you are competing with

2. Last week news - Research Engineer after 4 years changed career to become Insurance Agent and Quadrupled his pay.

3. Last week news - 35 year old mechanical engineer made tough choice to change career to medical.

Here's the reason...

1. Engineering is a sunset industry.

2. Especially for PMETs in the construction industry. After the 2 IRs, construction will be in a long long contraction and consolidation phase.

3. Cheap FT's coming in to compete and depress Engineer's pay.

4. Super cheap FT's that remain in their home country competing with your pay.

I believe that one should look further in time on where the enonomy is heading and by the looks of it .... Singapore is heading the way of being a financial and services industry. But one should choose to go finance as it is one of the (if not the biggest) GDP pie. And if you are good, the pay in the finance industry is unlimited.

U have said something which our shameless govt dare not mention in the national day rally. If they are not cowards, they would have highlighted the predicament of Singaporean Engineers who have been undercut by our foreign counterparts.

In fact, the entire speech ought to be in the dustbin.

engineering is sunset only in sg...try off shores ones instead.

as for the construction industry, there is still one more big public project coming up which is the sports hub.
with that being said, being a project engineer really sucks if you're in the construction industry.
this island is only so small and we can only build so much things before the soil structure weakens...

perhaps you might want to consider being an engineer in the data centre environment ?
though lots of OT...

You are half right.

I did a degree in engineering. Worked in engineering field.

It was a manly job in the beginning, but the pay never went up. I check around and my peers and classmates that did engineering face the same issue.

Those that did biz and those that went to banking are my friends that are enjoying life.

My high school classmates that are in finance grossed over 5 figure pay 10 years ago ... While those who went to engineering are finding it tough to pay the bills.

I have left the engineering field many years ago.....

I wished .... In my earlier years ... There was someone to better advise and guide ...

There is no escape.

All engineering field is a trap.

Just look at cosco and yangjiziang. All shares dropped by 70-80% from peak.

Now look at agin at DBS, ocbc & uob. All nearly back to their peak... And their earnings sing the same story.

Now think! Which company will give you your increment and handsome bonus?

PM did a very good job. If I am a foreigner, I will consider migrate to Singapore.

But as a Singaporean, I feel cheated in my home country which they may think that I am a 3 year old kid.

In today world, we talk about globalization.

For those who do not have much commitment or daring to take up the challenge , thy can always use their BEng to look for an Engineer job in overseas.

assume my starting basic is 3k in one of local bank with degree (DBS, ocbc & uob).

then 5 year down the road in the same bank, how much will be my basic, assuming I am just average performer??

There are other perks to banking

Cheap loan.

Obtaining cheap loan .... Is like a passive income that can be substantial.

Many hidden goodies in banking line......

That's right.

Globalization is key.

It is b'coz of globalization .... Engineering is getting cheaper and cheaper.

And yes ... You can look for job oversea ... But y do u have to? Y not get a degree that enables you to make tons, in a nice downtown office environment, and fill with pretty office ladies?

Y spent 4 years only to look for job overseas for greener pasture? Y be the FT overseas and be the hated one? Just like u hate the FTs here for depressing your pay.

the front offices are staying put in sg but backend moving operations to countries with cheaper manpower.
if you're a very driven person with a good ability to talk, front offices will provide a great challenge with commission rewards.

even though i'm currently studying finance now, i have no intention to go into this line.
never really like talking much so sales is out for me.
besides there are other better industries out there than the banking sector, is all a matter of how you pull strings to get into them mainly: shipping, oil and gas, maritime engineering.

the thing about banking sector is that they are using all the money their customers deposit inside to fund other investments, securities or loans to SMEs.

while our govt may be prudent in enforcing regulatory checks on the local banks, who really know one day we may have a sub prime crisis or whatever securities crisis that forces the closure of one of the banks ?
the trend of singaporeans getting into more debt for property purchases is becoming more apparent as property prices continue to rise due to the scarcity of land available.

can the govt really keep prices down for property, i doubt so.
with more population incoming and demand going upwards, the banks are proably laughing their way with more money coming in from housing loans.
