i'd choose the 2nd option. but i still dont get it is the foundation course integrated with the degree course like the one from newcastle university? if so, what are my chances of getting into that particular couse in uni.... or any other uni with foundation course?

As an Engineer, you must know how to self help to solve the problem since you are going to study engineering course & be an Engineer in future.

Have you email to universities like newcastle university to ask them if you can directly study BEng or any foundation/bridging modules to enter BEng?

i feel that its easier to go from engineering diploma to any other degree not related to engineering than for example a banking diploma to an engineering degree...... so, im afraid my chances are really low even if i graduate with my Business IT diploma in SP.... :/

Business courses is almost any trade cert/Dip/degree can enter. Eg: MBA.

However, don't tell me you want to use engineering Dip to enter MBBS, LLB & etc which is confirm a no way.

No way a top seller sales engineer can make the same as a top seller banker.
They are miles apart. I mean miles ....

Do your own research and find the truth yourself.

I left the engineering firm I was working for when I found out my senior manager was grossing $4k after being in the company for 20 over years.

I was shocked to find out that all 3 of my classmates who did banking (and they weren't even investment bankers) were grossing 5 figures in less then 10 years .... With bonuses averaging 6 months. Even at the height of the financial crisis ... They got 2 months bonus.

I was more shocked to find out that the company I used to work for retrenched half their engineering staffs when the job slowed down. It wasn't even in the recessionary years.

Also shocked to find out that when Sony closed it's trinitron plant.... Alll engineers and even engineering managers were trembling.

I see the stock market and I see all banks making record profits and are growing bigger by the day. I see with my eyesnthe finance companies are the one able to have the biggest building downtown. I also see eighth my eyes when I read the papers that nearly all those who rent the expensive condos from condo investors here are in the financial industry.

I also see with my eyes that engineering firms are mostly located at tuas (far and away), japan buroh area where the shipyards are at (the air is so horrid each time the wind blows), jurong island where u smell the petroleum smell, etc etc

Open your eyes and see the real world .....

I have friends who are from banking & engineering industries.

I have friend who have a BEng(Mech) start off as an Engineer & 5 years down the road he is promoted to Operation Manager.

I have friend who is not earning big bucks but work in a bank very busily since last year because he is in charge of shifting their operation to other countries. Every day he is afraid that he will be retrench once the transition is done.

As working professionals, I also monitor the trends of the market.

Every position have a salary ceiling range. The only way for a Senior Engineer to have a higher salary is by becoming a Manager at the next level to justified your salary by taking more responsibility.

Do not needs to be bankers. You can be a Sale Engineer to earn the same amount of banker gross salary if you are top seller.

The trends of the fresh graduates are all aiming blindly to enter bank without knowing what is the job that really earn a lot of money which is Investment. Some fresh graduates know IB can earn a lot of money & hope to become one however they did not know that there is no way bank will take in fresh graduates as IB unless they have network. Since IB from bank & financial adviser representative from insurance company are doing the same thing & can earn big bucks too, why most of the fresh graduates do not take up the job of financial adviser representative?

At the end, it is up to yourself to go how far you want because nobody except time is stopping you.

I do not needs to have experiences to tell anyone that a top seller sales engineer will never have a higher salary then a top seller banker.

However a top sales engineer can earn more then most of the banker.

I am taking about normal position & you are taking about top industry/position.

Why not compare with government/public sector position which is near 5 figures in less then 10 years or better MP/Minister salary?

Or why not compare with fresh graduates? SAF can give near to $5K for all OCT while bank can only give +-$3K for almost all fresh graduates & only about one or two have more then $4k & above.

In total, SAF can give give more labor cost compare to bank. So why not join SAF?

I was more shocked to find out that the company I used to work for retrenched half their engineering staffs when the job slowed down. It wasn't even in the recessionary years.

Recent news: Credit Suisse relocating some Singapore jobs: FT - Yahoo! News

If really bank is so good & earning profit, why shift operation to another counties & save cost? During transition period, there will be a huge jump in cost.

So what will happen to the operation staff in Singapore since the operation jobs have shift to other country?

Retrenchment! It is everywhere & not limited to engineering jobs & industries.

I also see with my eyes that engineering firms are mostly located at tuas (far and away), japan buroh area where the shipyards are at (the air is so horrid each time the wind blows), jurong island where u smell the petroleum smell, etc etc

Hello! Organization choice their operation location depend on the business needs. Who will open a bank at Tuas?

Shipyard, port & etc is to provide service such as repair, maintenance, build vessel & etc which must be next to seas & that is at the end of the land in that country.

Eg: PSA Tanjong Pagar Complex & etc is located at Keppel Road in Central which is very near CBD area such as Shenton Way which have building like MAS Building, DBS Towers, SGX Centres & etc.

Map for your reference: PSA Tanjong Pagar Complex

Open your eyes and see the real world .....

You can complain Engineering jobs F**K up & Bank Jobs are Best until cow can fly (In future, scientist, Technologist, Engineer & etc will invent flying suit to attach to cow to allow them to fly.) but it will not stop your miserable life if you do not wish to do anything such as changing jobs in local or overseas, study new trade & etc.

I think you should open your eyes and see the real world because no one owe you a living, career advancement & etc.

In today world, we talk about globalization.

For those who do not have much commitment or daring to take up the challenge , thy can always use their BEng to look for an Engineer job in overseas.

I am one of them. Remember me?

That is wishful thinking.

There is fixed number of engineering slots and fixed number of business slots universities.

These slots will be filled.

And it will always be biased towards churning out more engineers then needed.

That's right. Top seller sales engineer will never have a higher salary then a top seller banker. The fact is they don't even make a pityful fraction of a top seller banker.

No denying that top sales engineer can earn more then most banker. But banker make more then most sales engineer.

I also agree with you on the Gov/public sector/SAF/MP pay. And that is why the next best thing to be ... if you think you are not cut out to be banker ... being in the civil service is the other option.

I also totally agree with you that banks give +-$3k for fresh graduate. And it is this low starting pay that blind sides many students. They didn't see then hidden benefits and the potential banks give.

Yes, retrenchment is everywhere. But what is the extend of retrenchment? The devil is in the detail. Do your own research to learn the detail and your findings will shock you how skewed the answer is.

That's right. If you are in banking, you be working in downtown where the air is fresher and the babes are prettier. if you are engineer ... you can go to Tuas, jalan Buroh, Jurong island where the air smell like petroleum, the shipyard air smell like rusty dust and babes are non existance.

No one owes anyone a living. But one should strive to provide the best for their family. Spouse, kid, parents and some say relatives. Home prices are always going up. Medical bill is always rising. So is utility bill. You don't owe your wife or your kids an overseas holiday trip every year, or a car, or condo living. But it will be good to provide these item.

Even my roti prata and kopi-o price is going up year after year.

If your cousin is not cut out to be banker .... then join the civil service.

Teaching is a respectable job and 8-15% increment.

And that is why we have more and more FT coming in and this depresses Engineering pay.

These Engineering FTs work day and night without OT for pityful pay.

These are the people you will be competing with when you graduate.

If that is not enough .... you will need to work harder, fasterer and cheaperest. Have you heard of this expression? And do you know who said it? And can you think y this person said it?

One have to look at the big picture to understand how this world works.

Hmm no many ppl can make it to the top in banking. Need good degrees. If comparing normal career path i think that engineering is better. I give up econs and finance in sim and went to enrol in an engineering course. Banking degrees dun teach u how to buy stock shares etc. Either u know it or u dun. So wats the point of taking a business degree?

We are not employer/government & there is nothing we can do.

If we are Hiring Manager/Recruiter, the most we can do is to consider Singaporean first follow by PR & FT.

However at our own level, there is nothing we can do with low paid & ton of tasks to perform.

So if we cannot survive in Singapore, we have no choice but to find jobs in other counties just like the FT in Singapore.

PSA Tanjong Pagar is the last stronghold standing.

Did you know it is in the MasterPlan that it will soon be moved?

There is a choice. A career choice.

Whether to go ..

1. Banking and Finance which pays insanely after the exponential pay growth.

2. Civil service like teacher ... 8-15% increment and respectable job.

3. Doctor ... honourable and well paid

4. lawyer ... another well paid profession

5. Accounts ... good pay, nice office enviroment

or ... Engineering and be redicule like Phua Chu kang, (if you are in contruction), or have to look overseas for better paying engineering job, and have to compete with cheap cheap foreign FTs coming here that depresses engineering pay.

There is a choice and you are making that choice now .....
