You can look for counties that have minimum wage to protect you & other employee to prevent your engineering jobs become cheaper & cheaper.

What make you think you will get into jobs from banking industry or other office jobs when there are so many local & foreign graduates fighting for 1 job?

Most of the employers in want their employees to be cheaper, better & faster.

That's right.

Globalization is key.

It is b'coz of globalization .... Engineering is getting cheaper and cheaper.

And yes ... You can look for job oversea ... But y do u have to? Y not get a degree that enables you to make tons, in a nice downtown office environment, and fill with pretty office ladies?

Y spent 4 years only to look for job overseas for greener pasture? Y be the FT overseas and be the hated one? Just like u hate the FTs here for depressing your pay.

I don't think.

I study the charts and statistics.

Banking pie of the GDP is growing year after year.

Singapore is poised to be the financial centre for soutyh east Asia.... Just like London is for Europe.

Bynthe time banking move out Singapore ... All the manufacturing would have moved to china, Vietnam and saome say myammar.

all of you thinking of going banking.... wait till the banks move out of Singapore (some of them are in the process of doing so :s13:)

Not true.

Most employers want their employees to be cheaper, better and faster .... Only if you are cost centre to thte company.

And engineering is a cost centre. SMRT was a good example. Cut cost, cut cost and cut cost!

Furthermore, why study so much and then go through the hassle to look for countries and fight for minimum wage? Why go and study something that you know is going to pay you minimum wage? Why not study something that enables you to made unlimited wage?

And engineering is a cost centre. SMRT was a good example. Cut cost, cut cost and cut cost!

I think almost all jobs are under cost centre. Only Sale is not under cost centre. If you want, you can also become a sale engineer.

Furthermore, why study so much and then go through the hassle to look for countries and fight for minimum wage?

Cause you are born in Singapore & do not have the opportunity to venture out of Singapore such as commitment or dare to take up the challenge.

Why go and study something that you know is going to pay you minimum wage? Why not study something that enables you to made unlimited wage?

My understanding for unlimited wage jobs in Singapore is free lance jobs such as property agent, financial adviser representative & etc.

This is because all salary job will have a limited wage even those in banking. Even if you are top banker (saleman) in your bank & you want a higher salary then your CEO & etc, they will not give your expected salary.

So what should we study to enables us to made unlimited wage & what jobs have unlimited wage?

idk if this is the right thread to ask since this thread has been dugged up from 2011. haha!

im also contemplating between a business and engineering degree too...

im currently a Business IT student in SP, graduating next year (3 sem to go). cGPA not so good tho... 2.6 only...im leaning more towards engineering as i dont have that "love affair" for business nor programming/IT.

used to excel in Math, Physics and D&T back in my sec sch days... dont have idea why the heck i choose Business IT.

had a chat with some people from UQ (uni of Queensland). they said that its a bit hard to get into an engineering course with my current diploma. and chances are very low. however, im not sure if they are referring to advanced standing or start from foundation year in uni. kinda sad when they told me that.

is there any other options for me to pursue an engineering degree (specifically mechanical engg) with my current diploma? =/

Milo 178, I know what job is suitable for you! You can work at recruit express! Persuade others not to join engineering! hahahaha! If not you can be a analyst, you like reading charts and trends of the market. But I don't think you will be a good one though. You didn't see the so called downfall of engineering and so you are everywhere in HWZ forums complaining.

Seriously, can we report this dude? He is becoming more of a nuisance than help for forumers. I keep seeing his ramblings everywhere.

erm, I think a bit hard with your diploma and CGPA. Can try Kaplan or UniSIM. with your CGPA of 2.6, it will still be impossible to pull it up to close to 3.5 by the end of your poly right?

i know its really hard to pull to 3.5. im looking into overseas uni, i know local uni is really out of reach realistically... but when i look at overseas uni admissions, they dont indicate diploma from our local polytechnics. most overseas uni pre-requisites are cambridge A-levels.

i came across this : Engineering with Foundation Year BEng Honours : Course Overview - Undergraduate Study - Newcastle University
its an Engineering with Foundation year from Newcastle University. but then again, A-levels.... how do our local diploma grads enter uni... (sorry, im really new to this and dont know where to seek help from) :/

Hey, even Nitce & Higher Nitec can enter overseas Uni & what make you think Poly Dip cannot enter overseas Uni?

ITE cert, Poly Dip & Degree are 'trade' course & you must have related cert to advance your studies.

GCE N, O & A is academic & base on your related pass subjects/points to enter ITE cert, Poly Dip & Degree courses.

So the problem now is you want to use a unrelated Dip to enter a degree courses & therefore cannot enter directly.

The solution is simple & clear cut.

1st option: Use your Poly Dip to study a related degree.

2nd option: Use your Poly Dip to study foundation/bridging modules/realted Dip to study the degree you wanted to.

3rd option: Unable to make a decision now? Work first & decide later.

they do allow poly students to enter. A lot of my friends are doing their degrees over in UK, Australia and NZ. You can ask your school for help, if not you can just email the overseas uni and ask them about their entrance criteria for diploma grads. Always ask when you are in doubt.

I have discussed this topic with close friends and ex engineering colleauges.

Those that heed the advise never looked back and are much happier. And I feel good about it. It makes my day.

I started to read charts and trends of the market and everthing as I needed to find out the answer and reason why an Engineer's pay is going nowhere compared to other professions ... especially bankers. If you do your own research, and I suggest you better do (as your whole life might be stuck), you will most probably come to the same conclusion.

If you are going to spend 4 years through uni and work for another .. like till 62 or is it 65 year old? I really suggest you spend sometime and do your own research which degree/course you want to go for.

Don't listen to me, Jonsheesh, your parents (especially if your parents are living from cheque to cheque) or anybody else.... but listen to yourself and your research.

Banking is good money, yes, but not everyone can earn that kind of money. The average person working in the bank don't earn the big bucks.

The big bucks lie in the investment banks, and firstly, they don't hire that many fresh graduates. You have to be the best of the best to get noticed by them. And in this small select group, majority will be working in back office, which is a cost centre to the bank. This is not where the big bucks are. Sure, they do earn significantly more than the average starting engineer, but since you are doing research, you would know that a few of these banks in singapore are starting to move their back office operations overseas to India. Job stability is low for this group of people, and to make matters worse, it is virtually unheard of for this group of people to move up into the front office. The front office is the part of the bank that makes money, and which is steadily increasing the banking sector's contribution to singapore's gdp.

Hence, to really make the big money in the banks, you have to get into this elite sector of the bank. To get in here, it doesnt matter what you study already. Banks hire across disciplines for front office, as long as you meet their stringent requirements and have a good degree. In fact, engineers are highly sought after in banks because they have strong analytical and mathematical skills.

So to conclude, just study what interest you the most. You dont want to be miserable studying what you are not interested in, for the next 4 years of your life.

heck, you don't even need a degree as long as you have high value friends that you can convince them to invest in your bank/financial company

I have friends who are from banking & engineering industries.

I have friend who have a BEng(Mech) start off as an Engineer & 5 years down the road he is promoted to Operation Manager.

I have friend who is not earning big bucks but work in a bank very busily since last year because he is in charge of shifting their operation to other countries. Every day he is afraid that he will be retrench once the transition is done.

As working professionals, I also monitor the trends of the market.

Every position have a salary ceiling range. The only way for a Senior Engineer to have a higher salary is by becoming a Manager at the next level to justified your salary by taking more responsibility.

Do not needs to be bankers. You can be a Sale Engineer to earn the same amount of banker gross salary if you are top seller.

The trends of the fresh graduates are all aiming blindly to enter bank without knowing what is the job that really earn a lot of money which is Investment. Some fresh graduates know IB can earn a lot of money & hope to become one however they did not know that there is no way bank will take in fresh graduates as IB unless they have network. Since IB from bank & financial adviser representative from insurance company are doing the same thing & can earn big bucks too, why most of the fresh graduates do not take up the job of financial adviser representative?

At the end, it is up to yourself to go how far you want because nobody except time is stopping you.

i'd choose the 2nd option. but i still dont get it is the foundation course integrated with the degree course like the one from newcastle university? if so, what are my chances of getting into that particular couse in uni.... or any other uni with foundation course?

i feel that its easier to go from engineering diploma to any other degree not related to engineering than for example a banking diploma to an engineering degree...... so, im afraid my chances are really low even if i graduate with my Business IT diploma in SP.... :/
