Once you go big, can never go back small lol.

I'm looking at OP5T to replace my nexus 6p now. Essential phone has zero developer activity after so long. Not even TWRP recovery and root is available.

I also prefer fingerprint scanner to be at the back so OP5 is already out for me.

Haha got consider that.. Op5t looks really nice.. Given that I have spare chargers from my op5 / 3 / 3t.

But then would prefer the screen to size ratio.. Just that if only essential custom rom is as strong as op5, I will be happy liao

now use op5 also people thought pirated 7plus.... essential also have the pirated feel of ipx even though they are the first one to launch this 'full screen' thing.

back of essential look like iphone 4/5 series also...

nowaday..all phone evolve around iphone design :s13: look no longer matter...as long as the price and spec is right :p

Conclusion, at 499USD, it's a lot more reasonably priced, but still has its flaws that you need to consider before taking the plunge. The biggest for me is the camera/camera app. The hardware itself got limitations. Not cui looking la, but also not as good as most flagship phones around.

The Essential camera app is just annoying to me. Sluggish to change modes. You take a photo and change mode, the app will freeze a few seconds. Sometimes when you do that, or click the gallery icon too quickly while the phone is still processing the image, sometimes it will just discard the image. (this is still the case after the latest camera app and software update)

sideloading Google camera helps, but the app isn't super optimised for the phone in terms of the UI btw. But does improve the responsiveness of the camera app and quality in some situations.

Performance is good, but fluidity, speed, etc is still not at OP5, or Google Pixel level. Can still see some animations at lower frame rates, can see some minor stutters and pauses every now and then (if you really nitpick). It felt better after the latest update though. But like games and all those runs as well as you would expect. Battery life is just average to me.

To me i think maybe software optimisation and camera optimisation is just something that requires a lot of effort and experience to get right? So for new company, it just takes time i guess.

Other than that, hardware wise is super solid obviously. Most premium android phone out there? titanium and ceramic back plate is nice, and the bezel-less screen is awesome to look at. I'm not 100% fan of LCD, but it's a decent panel, just that maybe outdoor visibility can be a bit better.

No headphone jack no issue for me, but no water resistance is a bummer. IP54 is basically nothing.

So in the end, yeah. I love the hardware, the design, the size, the bezel-less screen. But it has its flaws too. At 499USD, maybe some of them can be overlooked if you're not too particular about those. It's great for someone who prioritises the design of their phone. :s13:

haha overdue impressions of this phone.

Summary: great design, great pricing, normal camera.

Got this phone a few days back after price drop. Was initially eyeing the Mi Mix 2 Special Edition but with the price drop, decided to try this phone.

Packaging: The packaging is superb, nicely packaged. no earphones though.

Phone design: Really awesome. Phone has a nice heft to it. feels premium. like flagship phone level of premium. the ceramic feels like glass anyway, so it is a nice change from the metal back of current daily driver (iphone 7). phone is a bit bigger than iphone 7, but manageable with my tiny hands (my hands are not big).

really impressed by the design. this feels really good.

Screen: i’m not knowledgeable about the technical details. but this screen is awesome. crisp, sharp and vivid colours. people say not amoled not good, but other than iphone x, i don’t think this phone loses any iphones in display quality. the screen is really sharp. i don’t see any pixelation at all. impressed by this screen, but i guess if u want to go flagship, u will definitely be scoffing at this for non-amoled.

software: no issues thus far, really smooth, no lag issues and no non-screen registration of touches issue. stock android so u know what u get.

camera: i’m not really a camera guy, but i get what people are saying about this. it’s not amazing and i think i’ll still use my other iphone 7 for photos? i think my gripe is the lack of image stabilisation. but i don’t get picky on cameras since i don’t take much photos so this is fine for me.

overall: this phone really makes me remember my nexus 5, just with better quality build. i think it’s a great phone for its price, and it’s a buy for anyone who wants stock android and doesn’t mind an average camera.

the common allegations against this phone are:
(1) lack of water proofing
(2) no headphone jack
(3) no wireless charging
(4) crap camera.

u have to know what you are getting. so if u don’t need waterproofing (and i have never used any waterproofing abilities of my other phones), already invested in wireless earphones (i have since i am with iphone currently) and don’t use wireless charging (well i don’t have any accessories cos i came from iphone 7) and don’t take photos that often, this phone is great at its price point.

many caveats, so i guess that’s why sales are low. but more people should think of this phone if they are currently considering the one plus5, mi mix2, the pixel 2, or even the pixel 2xl. simply because the specs are quite similar, u get huge screen size and almost everything the rest has (caveats above), for a lower price..

think essential just screwed itself with its launch and launch pricing. if it has pitched itself against one plus 5 and get developer support, this phone can go far. as it is.. a bit meh.

but yeah. personally i think i can try to make this phone my daily driver and see how it goes.
