It's free but you still need to enter the license key that was sent to you when you signed up for the download.

Sorry pardon my noobiness.. where do I enter the license key? I have already signed up and have the license key. But I can't find where in Vsphere to enter them :s11:

 over budget! Anything within $1k? or I can easily buy any cheap rig at sls and put a Intel Pro/1000 card inside?

Happy that I managed to set up ESXi 5.0 on an old HP dc7800 cpu :D

Can you recommend me a AMD micro mobo + processor that can support ESXi without any patching or additional NIC please.

Have you try lookign at http://www.vm-help.com//esx40i/esx40_whitebox_HCL.php

it has a list of supported board. Normally I would see the board in e.g. Asus for AMD and check the same series and double confirm the board chipset are the same.

As for Nics, there is no guarantee. Though realtek is supported but not all models, to have a perfect fit is almost not possible. Its lucky if its working else a separate nic is inevitable.

hokay, i kena silly bug from QNAP :(.

can only run one datastore using iscsi in vSPhere 5.

so if you intend to run Esxi 5 and using any VMware validated software iscsi NAS such as Synology or QNAP then you may face such issue.

The workaround is to use NFS. now i have 6 x nic port but cannot be binded for iscsi traffic anyway ..

Hi crypster,

I also bought the same main board Asus P8P67 Pro-B3 but at the ESXi 5 installation screen, it says that there isn' t any network card detected. How did you managed to install get the installer detect the onboard Intel 82579 NIC? Thanks a million

Curious. Why didn't u get the 2500k instead for a few dollars more?
