well, you could add a usb device in the vm and passthru USB harddisks to the VM from the ESXi host in ESXi 4.1. It also supports vMotion :o

Refer to the vSphere VM management guide for more details or browse vmware kb with usb drive

good info thanks! :) shld have read up more on the new feature sets released in 4.1 rather than anything else. lol.

Hmm. anybody tried ESXi 3.5 before? Wonder if there's much difference from ESXi 4.

Sadly my server has a 100Mbit adapter and ESXi 4 dosent support 100Mbit anymore
in order to make use of it have to downgrade. :(

Hmm it seems like passthrough also requires a Intel-VT or AMD-V supported processor. Cuz i tried on mine which does not support HVM and i got a "Host does not support passthrough configuration" error. :s22:

Yes, there are a list of vmware tested and approved device list to used with directIO. Usually is those nic cards.

However, unapproved devices are fine for non-production use. Just like mine, i virtualized my TV recorder :s13:

bro, i oso wanna virtualized my PCI Raid Controller and TV tuner card and exposed it to my VMs, but after some googling, i discover that the CPU and Mobo used need to support Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) and IOMMU for AMD in order for VMware VMDirectPath to work....

Can you tell me what cpu, mobo and tv recorder card are you using right now bro ??

Thanks for the help in advance bro :s13:

Anyone tried using active directory to authenticate? Vsphere?

What happens when the domain controller in the vm fails? Can it still login as local root?

Never mind founded it. Esix host authenticate by active directory.

http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/resources/582

The local "root" user is still valid.

Root is always enabled by default - it is the first login that you will configure as well. some people disable root and create 2nd admin as well.. . depending on how you look at it. ...

anyway ESXi5 has firewall again . . sianz.

i remember there is post saying raid such as from amd sb850 or Intel ICH-R is not supported in esx or esxi.

how about IBM ServeRaid M1015, on the pdf it says support esx/esxi 4.0/4.1. is that mean it support raid 0 in the setup?
