The design is pretty ugly actually... especially the vertically aligned dual camera module... really poor aesthetically...

On my s8, facial reg doesn't work in the dark but iris scanner works.

Not sure if it's the same for the new iPhone.

Not flaming but just sharing, hope they didn't miss this point while incorporating the facial lock.

Face ID will work in low light due to the infrared sensor incorporated. Also, it will not unlock the phone by placing the your own photo in front of the phone.

*Can't say the same for twins.

From the demo, it seems Face ID unlocks only when you swipe up. Not sufficient to just look at the phone, right?

Apple's New Face ID Biometric System Works in the Dark and When Your Face is Obscured by Hats and Beards

How Face ID Scans Your Face

Face ID is enabled through a TrueDepth front-facing camera on the iPhone X, which has multiple components. A Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible dots onto your face to map its structure.

The dot map is then read by an infrared camera and the structure of your face is relayed to the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X and transformed into a mathematical model. The A11 chip then compares your facial structure to the facial scan stored in the iPhone X during the setup process.

Face ID in the Dark

Face ID uses infrared to scan your face, so it works in low lighting conditions and in the dark. The TrueDepth camera also has what Apple calls a "Flood Illuminator," aka an infrared light that illuminates your face in the dark so the dot map and the infrared camera can do their jobs.

Fooling Face ID

First of all, Face ID can't be fooled by a photo because it takes a 3D facial scan to unlock a device. Face ID is also "attention aware," a feature Apple implemented for extra security.

Face ID With Hats, Beards, Makeup, and Glasses

Face ID works with hats, beards, glasses, scarves, and other accessories that partially obscure the face. According to Apple, this is because the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X uses machine learning and a neural engine to recognize changes in your appearance.

Face ID When Unconscious or Sleeping

If someone knocks you unconscious or attempts to unlock your iPhone X with your face while you're sleeping, it's not going to work.

Face ID at an Angle

You don't need to hold the iPhone X right in front of your face for it to make a Face ID scan. On stage at the keynote event, it was shown held at a comfortable viewing angle and held flat downwards while making an Apple Pay payment at payment terminal.

those on the fence regarding how good it is, jus wait for reviews.

the future is here. it is not going to be cheap.

Saw a video from some German tech blog and the Apple spokesman shows that Face ID kicks in once you look at the phone screen.

This is one of Craig’s bad keynote moments. IMO, he wanted to show how Face ID works later on but in turn, it made people believe that the system works slow (slower than Touch ID gen 2 that is) because he raised the phone to his face and then swiped up. Not to mention the first blunder made it worse.

If the actual product unlocks when you just look at the screen and swipe up, that will be just as fast as Touch ID. But we will just have to wait and see.

Looking at the product showcase, the unlock is quite fast but the additional gesture of swiping up makes unlocking of the phone slow.

There is a lock/unlock icon telling you whether the phone has been unlocked. So you just have to swipe up to start using.

I believe you don't have to raise your phone directly in front of your face to unlock. It should work even at a certain angle.

i certainly hope so. i dun wan to always have to hold it up in front of me before it unlocks and swipe up. cos for my current 7+, i just tap the touch ID while it is on the way out of the pocket and by the time i see my screen, it is unlocked n at the home screen most of the time.

Apple‘s 10th-anniversary device, the iPhone X, was officially announced on Tuesday, causing Apple’s stocks to drop along with it. Full of advanced features such as Face ID and a TrueDepth camera system, Apple has marked a price tag of $999 USD for the 64GB models and $1,149 USD for the 256GB, which will be available to pre-oder on October 27 at 12:01 PDT and launches on November 3 in both Silver and Space Grey options.

For those living outside of the U.S., the iPhone X will cost you a bit more, and this is not including local taxes. Check out some of the countries listed below and their prices for the entry-level iPhone X.
