65 Fans Tested on a Megahalems
This project began with a goal — run an Intel Core i7 860 at 4GHz consistently in a room with ambient temperatures of thirty degrees centigrade (30°C), and without excessive noise. Among the air-cooled heatsinks, the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev. B seemed to be the best choice at the time. The Megahalems Rev. B also comes with clips for two 120×25 mm fans, and clips for 120×38 mm fans are available, from other retailers. The Megahalems does not come with its own fans. This avoids wasting money on fans that may not meet the user’s needs, but it does raise the question, “What fans do I use?” I have collected a number of fans from a variety of places; they run from fancy to plain, expensive to dirt cheap, noisy to barely audible. I tested all of these on the Megahalems heatsink.

The Fans

Below is the list of fans tested, as used on the chart (in parentheses: blade count, fan size, airflow in cubic feet per minute – CFM – reported by manufacturer, and other information as appropriate; ‘N/A’ means ‘not available’):

Anatomy of Computer Fans
Computer fans are basically brushless motors with blades attached to them in order to move air. They are common-place inside a computer and can be constructed with different technologies. In this tutorial we will be examining one of the components found in fans that is the subject of a lot of confusion, the bearing.

Zalman ZM-F3 FDB & ZM-SF3 Fans
Heat has been a major issue in the computer market for several years now, especially with the newest hardware on the market. It is an even bigger issue for overclockers, and for people who live in naturally hot places, i.e. when room temperatures exceed 28C / 83F. In this situation, users need to upgrade their cooling systems to prevent hardware damage. Most users buy fans for their system based on price, but without careful research, an average person is more then likely to fall into the noise trap: the wrong kind of fan will result in a very noisy PC, and users will be forced to spend money on rectifying this problem. At first, this might seem like a dead end for some people, but with Zalman's newly released quiet ZM-F1 80mm, ZM-F2 92mm, and ZM-F3 120mm Fluid Dynamic Bearing fans, as well as Zalman's quiet Shark's Fin Blade Design quiet ZM-SF3 120mm fans, users have finally found fans that ventilate quietly without decreasing performance. Zalman claims that their Fluid Dynamic Bearing have a very quiet motor, and the Shark's Fin Blade Design fans have a blade design that reduces air turbulence without reducing air flow. Let's take a look at how these fans compare to their well known Noctua counterparts.
