I used to think so also, but now my view is not so fixed..
I'd say that vinyl has advantages in the energy and emotion section, and while it has its complexities, much of it is known. This lets most people get much higher performance at the same price point.. a $10k well set up TT is going to a win a $30k CDP almost all the time in majority of people's setups.
One reason is that many people still don't know how to get great digital output still, and think CDP or PC playback is 'plug and play'. If you put in enough effort here, it would also sound good and I don't think will lose that much to vinyl.
Having said that, there are still advances in TT - for instance I find the laser LP players very interesting.. I feel getting rid of the needle is a great step in at least helping the longevity issue.
