Light the fire and let the grilling begin (2013 Edition)

When my maternal grandmother was still living in the kampong, it's our custom to gather at her house during the Chinese New Year. As many as up to 80 or more relatives and friends will gather there and cooking involved quite a few of the women folks with the many pots and pans over gas and charcoal stoves. All these are just memories now as the kampong had been redeveloped and my grandmother passed away.

So during Chinese New Year, my 3rd uncle and aunt will invite us and some of our relatives to their house for BBQ. It had since became an annual affair which we look forward to for a night of gathering, feasting and chit chatting, just like the good old days.

Curry Tulung - My uncle cooked this dish and I finally got to ask him how he does it. He uses the A1 brand curry powder with a sprinkling of cardamom to give it that extra rich flavour.

Same goes for this Mutton Rendang and it's then cooked in a slow cooker overnight to tenderise the mutton to the almost melt in your mouth texture. Goes well with white rice which was also available that night.

Knowing that we all love this Bone-in Ham, she never fail to prepare it for us. She told us that after the ham was cooked, she left the ham in the oven with the power off but it seem the residual heat in the oven browned the ham to a nice golden brown. In case you would like to know, the ham weight around 5-6kg and the black dots are cloves.

BBQ Spring Chicken - OK, we did not do it from scratch. My uncle asked the BBQ stall to cook it till about 70% done and the rest was up to us.

Sausages on the Grill - There were quite a few types of sausages and the thicker types were from Australia which my cousin bought home.

071-BBQ2013.jpg

BBQ Spring Chicken - Well, the end result doesn't look as nice in appearance as those bought from the stall but it's yummy nonetheless.

072-BBQ2013.jpg

Toasting Croissants - We even got an oven to toast the croissants which we used to sandwich the sliced ham. Crispy on the outside and chewy texture inside with a nice buttery flavour.

Onion, Cucumber and Peanut Gravy - Yep, we are having satays.

075-BBQ2013.jpg

Bone-in Ham - The fatty layer near the skin were the best. My aunt soaked the ham in pineapple juice before roasting it, so it's not salty at all. At the end of the night, she divided out the leftover and distributed to each of our families to bring home.

Mutton Rendang - Braised till it's so tender, it's almost melt in your mouth texture. Sedap.

My 5th aunt bought these Teochew Kuehs. I was told they are famous for these kuehs.

079-BBQ2013.jpg

Chives Kuehs - The thin skin enclosed a filling full of chopped chives which I enjoyed munching on. Will let you take a peek at the filling inside in the next post. :D

080-BBQ2013.jpg

Soon Kuehs - The more common of the two kuehs for they are also not stingy with the fillings. Each one firmly packed with shredded turnip, carrot, dried shrimps and mushroom.

081-BBQ2013.jpg

Chives and Soon Kuehs - Drizzle them with sweet black sauce and chilli sauce and there you have, a meal by itself.

Chives and Soon Kuehs - As promised, here is a picture of the chive filling before I devoured it. Actually the person holding the plate wanted to show off her 3D nail design but I cropped it off. :D Sorry, finger nails and food don't seem to be a good match.

Sausages and Yakitori - You have seen the sausages and now lets meet the yakitori. :D

Cousin got these Assorted Sausages all the way back from Australia. Unlike the sausages sold here locally, the fillings were more coarsely chopped and after grilling more firm to the bite.

Satays and Sausages on the Grill - The sun had set and the sky was dark but the lamp above the BBQ pit kept flashing on and off at short interval, resulting in some burnt foods as we cannot see clearly in the dark. Time to switch BBQ pit.

091-BBQ2013.jpg

New and Old way to start a fire - Now that we have switched BBQ pit, it's time to restart the fire from the glowing embers.

092-BBQ2013.jpg

Satays and Chicken Wings on the Grill - The lighting was so much brighter at this BBQ pit. Only pork satays here since some of the guests do not take beef or mutton or both.
