How to get into "recovery mode"

  1. Power off your phone
  2. Hold down the entire volume rocker (volume up + volume down), and while keeping it pressed, hold the power button and wait
  3. After a short vibration, the screen will turn on and you will see a Android with a "Start" label. Some info on your firmware and bootloader version can be found here too.
  4. Use your volume keys to change the option, and the power button to run the option. E.g. to reboot into recovery, press volume down twice until it shows "Recovery Mode", then press the power button to confirm

How to perform a Nandroid Backup
A Nandroid backup is basically an image of your rom, which includes your settings, sms, homescreens etc. Very similar to disk images for PCs created by "Cloning/Imaging" software.
-------
  1. Boot into recovery using the method above, or use the reboot into recovery option if your rom has it.
  2. At the screen with the blue text, press volume down until "Backup and Restore" is highlighted.
  3. Press power button to select
  4. Press power button again to select "backup"
  5. Wait while the backup runs. Will take a while so grab a drink.
  6. Once it's done, you will be brought back to the blue screen again. Use volume keys and power button to navigate through the menus and reboot your phone.
------
To restore, follow the above steps but select the "restore" option instead. This will restore your phone to an earlier state, wiping away any new settings. Your other files will remain untouched.

Why does my Market, GMail etc disappear after flashing a rom?
You need to reboot into recovery and install gapps
You should be able to find a link to gapps on your rom's info page

How to check if my phone is not suffering from amnesia when it's supposed to sleep?
Install CPU Spy, run it and look at the last section of the graph.

Backing up and restoring EFS (by silow from xda).
efs contains important IMEI information and is thus recommended to keep a copy of it somewhere safe.

Edit: Try an app I whipped up :) It pulls a copy in img format to your "/sdcard" folder

BACKUP:
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/efs of=/sdcard/efs.img

While you are in adb, issue the following command to copy the backup to your computer (or just copy it in Explorer)
adb pull /sdcard/efs.img c:\efs.img

RESTORE:
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/efs.img of=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/efs

I am on stock rom, anyone who is on stock/custom rom can share their review?

AOKP is the first rom I tried, stuck to it till now.

Codename Android has lots of stuff from various developers, if you like different configuration options.

===========

Btw, GLaDOS kernel developer just hit 1.62 GHz on stock voltages :s12:
Been switching between his kernel and Fugumod, both work without issues.

Just to check, am new to android. If I am using stock rom, but have rooted my phone and change baseband, am I able to update OTA if there is any new update to the stock rom, or will the different baseband cause the OTA update to fail?

Dont have to place in the folder..

After rooting, unlocking and installing CWM on ur device..Reboot into normal mode, connect via cable to ur desktop and copy the files into ur phone storage..Shutdown and restart into Recovery mode then flash from there..

Flash ROM, Baseband then Kernel..

@Gixxerfied, Do you realise that for aokp build 23, at the screen lock, the nav bar is black out? meaning the circle around the unlock button is cut off by the blacked out nav bar?

The circle where the shortcuts will fall onto or the Circle with the lock itself???

There was an option to hide the nav bar completely in an earlier build but it was taken out as it resulted in issues during incoming calls.

MMS.apk from tranquilice rom for Toro comes with configurable LED settings, testing it now but doesn't seem to have any issues. Hopefully the developer releases a version for GSM Galaxy Nexus soon.
