i'm not really an android fan that needs the latest software..
i just want a phone that have good battery life, smaller form factor and good looking.
looks like i have to think very hard about it again...

"good battery life" --> try Motorola Razr Maxx, which receives many good reviews on the battery life of more than 24 hours use.

"smaller form factor" --> no recommendation at the moment. Large battery capacity means larger form factor. This holds true until new battery technology appears.

"good looking" --> well, that depends on your taste. No recommendation.

Does anyone encounter any issues with wifi hotspots tethering on any of the custom ROMs?

I am currently on Bugless Beast latest build and even though i am able to establish a wireless connection, the internet is not working (i.e. the websites will not load at all).

Have done a fair share of goggling and it seems that most users encountering this issue were using non-gsm sets.

Is this related to any telco provider settings that might reside in any of the system files?

You can easily flash it to Google's standard firmware without any bloat.

Was originally using CdTdroid's 1.4. Worked okay, but the battery idle time was quite bad compared to cm9 even after calibration (I could typically go about 3-4 days on cm9 and I only got about 2 days on cdt).

Went to cdt 1.5 cuz his notes said that battery would be improved. Unfortunately after flashing, the device was no longer labelled as a galaxy nexus; unable to push apps to install from webstore instead. Got frustrated of scrollling to install, wiped again, went to CM10 Jellybro. So far looking good. Need a few more days to test though.

Comparing to the Gnex toolkit, I actually prefer the idea of GNFF

Ultimately, i still prefer the manual way of flashing via fastboot from command prompt.

well, i dunno GNFF is very new.

Toolkit simple / friendly
Manual hard / not friendly

but knowing how manual works in details, when something is wrong, i get a better picture what went wrong in flashing.

Ya, but no problem with that.
Just like how some like to walk, some like to take bus, some like to drive car. In a sense, walking can see more scenery but driving is faster.

Yea don't see what's the problem. Some people just want to do it in the quickest way. Since both ways get you to the same destination, just pick any one.

Imo hard part of manual us setting up the driver, command lines are fairly easy.

It irks me when people who did not bother to read up about rooting and just blindly clicking buttons ask for help when then problem is easily solvable.

Not shooting you BTW, just sharing my observations.

agree, the driver sometimes takes a while to either get the right driver or reboot etc.

Not a problem, I only use manual , I even had the android sdk installed. I didnt use the adb
/fastboot (package)

Sometimes it's the android_winusb.inf file that couldn't be installed. Took me lots of time before identifying what was wrong.

The driver installation was a bit troublesome, even while using the toolkit. Took me a while to finally figure out what the toolkit wanted me to do.
