Android got many manufacturers, apple only got 1 phone..

Similar analogy to why tyre manufacturers don't make their tires last forever..

still haven't found a compelling reason to upgrade to P5 from P3

1) the width of the display is 1mm wider only.. from P3 to P5. taller display doesn't really do much
2) main camera same same between the two
3) wide camera more or less useless during covit19 as this year end holiday is canned
4) 5G.. what 5G?
5) same no warranty as my out of warranty P3

Advantage for P5
1) new battery, much bigger battery (P3 battery a bit cui already. 80+% at 9am, will be 30+% by 5pm). But then again, work from home doesn't really matter also
2) better display. but then again P3 display is no runover
3) 3 full years of updates.. vs 1 year left for P3

Advantage for P3
1) The front dual selfie camera is a sure winner!
2) Solid front facing stereo speakers
3) unlimited full image and video backups! untill Jan 2022

haiz... 1st world problems.

You missed out some big points about the P5 :D

1) Double the ram from 4gb (P3) to 8gb (P5), this is very significant, should result in smoother operation overall and app switching without restarting apps.
2) Wide angle rear camera, you're making up reasons why its not useful. Wide angle isn't just for scenery. Its also for photography in confined areas when you can't step back to capture more of the scene.
3) Metal body, more durable, better cooling too

the comparison is done from my own usage pattern and not from a which is technically better.

1) agree 8GB ram is much much better from a device longevity perspective. But I do not have issues at all with 4GB from my own usage habits.
2) I also want the ultra wide angle. But if i am not going holiday, ultra wide is seldom used. Ultra wide introduces distortions for day to day shots which I hate. So for me, ultra wide is really used only for scenery or those holiday been there done that kind of shots.
3) I also like metal body. But you are aware it is coated in a layer of plastic right? so you are actually feeling the plastic and not the metal. the plastic coating layer supposedly hides the wireless charging coils. will have to wait for a tear down to see actual implementation

P5 gives me the nexus 5 kind of vibes. And i really like N5. But is it compelling enough from a P3 user perspective? So far the answer is NO. unless my P3 battery craps out tomorrow... choy.. touch wood...

And the biggest unknown is will Volte & wifi-calling continue to be supported for Singtel and starhub for P5. I think for M1 and the others very very little hope if any. 5G support by local telcos on P5 also total unknown.

Not everyone can afford to buy a new phone. and there's really no reason to upgrade their phone every year if there's support for older phones

Not every year also, like for iphone, 5yrs of software, 3yrs for android.. you can choose when to upgrade when you feel your phone is no longer up to scratch..

I jumped on the P5 because of fingerprint, similar to the OG pixel. Esp now with mask wearing, impossible to unlock using face ID

google do not dictate manufacturers how long they can support their devices. samsung can decide 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, etc...

apple has been launching multiple phones a year now, in case u're still in the dark. to support a phone that is 4 or 5 years old with the latest features is a feat. it needs to ensure the old phones are working well and fast enough with the latest fw.

Personally I still have an iphone 7 running ios14 which still runs fine.

Also using Pixel running android10 which i feel its almost end of its life.. and its the reason why i'm changing..

So both phones are roughly 4 yrs old.

My favorite material is polycarbonate, currently on my 3a. Glass not durable. Metal i think also not as strong. Been on my 3a without a case since day 1. Hardly a scratch

Yah...I personally have never understood the industry shift to deem plastic as an "inferior" material.

Plastic as a raw material IS cheaper but does that make it any less premium ?
It's how you use it that matters. I have seen phones with glass back that feels less premium.

I hope Google continue this manufacturing direction so long they pass the costs savings to consumers. It helps that it also makes the phones lighter.

this is a major plus for me. together with the small size and 151g weight.

i actually got a P4 sealed unit from carohell for 400 but didn't unboxed it after getting confirmation that all the local banks still don't support it and it is a pain to use with mask. sold it at 600.. first time i flip something on carohell.

if iP12 is still only faceid and touchid doesn't return. very likely I will get my kakis to get a P5 from taiwan.

on a different note, google photo's new photo editing interface and flow is really nice!

iphone so far only experienced touch disease on ip6, no batteries bloat etc, but pixel qc mostly got issues... google cannot use pixel as h/w beta for its users

thats the benefit of having both hardware and software in ur control which apple dominates. whereas for android, google have to cater to 100++ manufacturers with different hardwares and all of them have different skin on top of them
