Cost is a major factor.

Apple and Samsung are selling multi millions of phones every quarter.

Google was selling 0.5M Pixel last quarter.

Not fair to compare these, as the 2017 models will feature newer gen chipsets such as the Snapdragon 835. But the Google Pixel should still hold its ground against the 2017 flagships due to how Google blessed it with it's own special sauce.

Well.. I've used a fair share of Samsung phones in the past, including S6e/7e.. and really, I don't understand why can't they go with pure Android. It's so much smoother. No matter how much faster the processor is, the system still lags due to touchWiz (and I'm not just taking about the launcher). Kinda miss the GPE program..
If you don't value the stock experience, you may be very much tempted to move onto the G6/S8, so on..

Nexus/pixel program will be meaningless and not be born if every OEM goes with pure Google OS. there will be no identify to represent their own brand.

I used goo phone since Nexus 4, and gotten them approx by 4th qtr of each year, and yes tons of new phones from a new year showed off blah blah. But for me personally I'm just contented with mine mainly due to simplistic and good software optimization than any others.

I believe manufacturers can choose to go close to pure if they want to. Probably their main reason for skinning is to stand out in the market and be attractive (not to you or me, but for mass majority).
OnePlus are very close to pure with their OxygenOS. If you buy some no-brand cheap China phone, chances are it does not come skinned either.

Of course they can, but why would they? Most consumers prefer the added features of the custom Android versions. In fact, many of such features have later been committed upstream to AOSP, such as Samsung's multi-window. Samsung had developer versions of some of their earlier phones, but I suppose not many people bought it so we haven't seen one since the Note 4.

Well then you'd understand the term, to each their own. That's the flexibility and beauty of Android.

have a question on google assistant, anyone have problems activating it? I am unable to activate mine (totally greyed out) and it mentions that "English (Singapore) is not yet supported by Google Assistant"

any way to change the language so that i can run Google Assistant?

edit: turns out just changing your language in the main settings would allow usage for google assistant

Yes, you will need to use English (US). Just stick with English (US) if you want to utilise Google services fully.

But it's kind of a chicken and egg story right? When you release the phone in limited markets, of course your volume turnover will be small.

If Google is concerned about the logistics side of things, they could have released the phone through the local telcos. That's what most phone manufacturers do anyway. So Google's business decision is very puzzling.
