I would totally agree with your comments on African beans and light roast (for some reasons, these 2 often come hand in hand :s13:)
I struggled a lot trying to pull a good shot on some very lightly roasted Ethiopian and Kenyan. I grind significantly finer than my usual setting for Brazil and Sumatra beans and the shots still run way too fast (18-23s).
What I did was to up dose and increase the temp by 3 degree to compensate.
Yeah, the lucky part is I don't really appreciate African beans(except Ethiopian)

Nowadays, I'll stick with mid roast coffee from central America and Indonesian.
I think they are more suitable for my palate, cheaper and easier to pull.

Lelit is $533 after gst.
Stepped, no timer.

Just want to correct this, the Lelit PL53 is a stepless grinder, hence it is recommended for espresso. However the local price is a bit off. If budget is an issue then I would say go for the ascaso imini.
If you can spend more, of course go for one with a bigger bur, though I dont have any issue with coffee grounds get hot with the Lelit.

is the baratza encore an OK buy?

I have the baratza preciso, and it's pretty decent as an all purpose grinder. However the build quality, even for the preciso, is quite poor and mine required servicing just after 3 months. I guess it's okay if you just wanna test the water.
Also if you are doing non pressurised espresso you might wanna get the virtuoso instead. Don't think the encore can grind fine enough for espresso

ok, i might go for the encore then. if necessary i will upgrade it in future.

one more question, i noticed after extracting coffee from the portafilter, there are coffee grounds remaining which are stuck around the outlet on the machine. I'm assuming this is not a common problem? Am I supposed to remove the stuck coffee grounds asap? If I leave it there, would cockroaches go and check it out?

Unless the cockroaches are crazy, they won't want to go near coffee.

It's always good practice to brush off the coffee grounds after extraction and give your portafilter a good rinse through the grouphead. Coffee gunk can get really disgusting and might affect your next cup.

The China model is a triple thermobloc. Same technology used in those Krups, nespresso delonghi machines.

Outside make it look like e61 nia don't know for what.

Hard to tell from specs or photos alone. Best if u can try the machine and taste the results. Thermoblock has a disadvantage of scale compared to boilers. The Thermoblock system also needs to be tuned carefully to get consistent shot to shot temperature.

But if it's cheap, results taste good, build seems solid then why not?

seems not bad from the video.

https://www.facebook.com/Milkglider/videos/1644876235771304/

But best to see it in real life and try it out.

this welhome company seems interesting. they make quite alot of other products too. grinders and accessories.

if china can up the game and make good competitive products that will force the european market to be price more competitively too.

steaming is pretty decent for another one of their models
