need advice guys. I'm intending to get a machine, but my major concern is warm up time. I'm the only person drinking coffee, perhaps 1 in the morning and 1 evening. My personal preference is a machine that can warm up fast for a drink.

For this, i'm considering single boiler or HX. I've read that silvia warms up around 20 mins -30 mins. Are there any machines that could do it even faster?

Need advice!

Key is good time management know your routine.
With that much metal it takes time to heat things up no way around it.

U can also get a device to program when to turn machine on, but if u come back early or late too bad not intelligent enough.
Nothing can help u if it depends on mood, say now I want to drink but in 20 mins time cannot drink I don't want no more

You can try if it's cheap within your budget, how much is it?
It's endorsed by Heston, the same guy who endorsed for Nespresso.

A double boiler weights about 30kg, BDB is 13kg?
I can only guess it's plastic inside and out like most domestic grade machines. Not sure how the components stand against the heat and pressure over time but reviews talk about major malfunction with spares giving way after 1-2 years.

Also not sure if the machines remain serviceable after their models phase out in a few years.

The steam looks pretty weak for a double boiler though.

ok i've decided to get the BDB, seems bang for the buck?

How much is it? Why is it best value? 15min vs 25min??
u still need to buy a grinder for this.

entry level such maybe better also 15min to get going

The BDB has been tested to be as temperature stable as the GS3, and its steam power should be sufficient for the low volume needs. Even a machine like the GS3 has parts that require periodic replacement.

You prolly could go with something like the sproline foam tip or the lyn weber foam tip to compensate for weaker steam.

I was looking for a machine for my uncle and Breville's machine was in our list before reading this.

Seems like it's not as serviceable and what happen if the warranty expired? Need to fork out for a new machine?
The last time I fixed my portafilter gasket, it only costed me $15 and I was quoted $150(includes pick and return) to fix a pressure issue but fortunately it turn out to be no issue.

The BDB is not really that cheap, IIRC it was about $2k.
That amount of money for domestic components is not worth it.
I believe in long term, you will definitely pay more.

Spend a bit more money for better machines.

A portafilter gasket is likely to be vastly different from what the person in the post experienced.

A replacement silicone gasket costs about $2-3 and can be replaced with just a flathead screwdriver and a pick. It's hard to compare the serviceability without know what the issue he experienced was, and "better machines" are potentially equally susceptible to failure.

I read a few reviews Beeville just replace with new machines. Not isolated case.
Think it's on those mass production concept, just replace and save money n trouble on technicians.

I think it's like comparing Casio and Rolex.
Those vbm, rocket,Bezzera, expobar are proven to be still serviceable and high performing after 30 to 50 over years of use. Heck, people even buy those used ones at high price, I may even earn a profit from inflation.

Bdb will probably tell you to buy a new one as the model had reached eol and spares no longer available and there's nothing you can do about it. Even strong appliance brands like Bosch and Miele seldom support more than 5 years.

I also think that buying a used unit is imo the best deal if you have a tight budget. You buy at $2k, you also can sell at 1.5k if your interest die.

thanks for the inputs from you espresso gurus about the BDB. I too was suspecting the plastic parts but for the price vs. features, just too ideal.

I decided not to go for this, so now my options are still open. I'm the only person drinking in my home and typically 1 cup morning and 1 cup night. I would assume I'm looking for a HX? Any good machines to recommend?

Should I go down to the shops to test? Looking for an E61.

Looking forward to the advice from you guys. thanks!

Profit due to inflation is still profit??? Lol
Sell then may not even afford half a new machine with same or similar specs. Can also buy less bowls of noodles

At 2k. Check out magica and bz13. Sometimes if you are lucky, will have a bit of promotion. Expobar I heard from 1 retailer still ok. Definitely more serviceable than breville. But I feel bezzera could be a better option. At least no bad reviews so far. Expobar still got some.
