Hi! I'm thinking of getting a Nespresso system. For a KOPI O KOSONG drinker like me, may a kind heart point out what's the flavour by Nespresso that is similar to it?

You can taste the different capsules at Nespresso shops or selected counters. Try Taka or Ion. You should be looking at Lungo options.

I bought a big bottle of descaler from amazon. Try prime now. See if they still have it. Doesn’t matter what brand.

Quite subjective, I am guessing you like something robust, full bodied and maybe a little smoky. Go for the kazaar.

Why not go nespresso and try out 2 capsules. Test out maybe a rosabaya first and then test out the kazaar. see where your test preferences fall between this spectrum.

None.

Kopi O Kosong is asian coffee style. Beans are roasted completely different from the angmo Nespresso style. Preparation method is also different so you won't get the same taste no matter what...

well you are not wrong. I suppose the easiest way for K.O.K is to use a french press with dark roasted beans.

I have to agree with Lazy_Tiger, french press or chemex (pour over style) will work. Don't need fancy machine and buy expensive capsule.

nespresso shot and want to drink a glass of KOK, if u keep extracting just bad.

Just saw Italian beans (i.e. roasted in Italy) in a brown paper packaging with no valve. Nothing fancy and looks very home-made DIY stuff. You can see the "oils" seep out from the packaging. Looked at the expiry date and it indicate 2020! Does this make sense?

All are non issues. What is important is the roast date and the quality of beans used.

Most roasters will state their beans expiry date 1 year post roast. Expiry is different from best before date.....

Where are the beans from? I’m craving for a dark Italian roast.

Why not go the full mile and use a coffee sock + actual asian-style roasted beans? This way you get a real KOK instead of trying to replicate it using other beans and angmo brewing techniques?

Its still confusing as the packaging is not as good as the aluminium/plastic ones. Roast date was 1-2 months ago but they indicate the best before date as 1.5 to 2 years from now which is quite optimistic. Maybe its possible in Europe but not in our kind of weather.

They source the beans from everywhere mixing arabica and robusta.

Talking about Italian roast, how does it compare with French and German roasts?

Well TBH there is not much standardisation or what what defines an italian, french roast. But generally italian or french roasts are dark roasts with visible surface oil that partially or fully cover the beans. (illy is an exception). You will get that classic italian style ristretto which is rich, creamy, bitter sweet, pungent roasty notes with almost zero acidity. Can try st ali's orthodox blend from cafebond as a good example.

have not really experienced a german roast...

some roasters use an agtron scale to standardise their roast colour but i think different beans colour differently so the agtron scale only works well in differentiating roast levels in the same type of beans.

Hi guys,

What is a good beginner machine for a step-up from the Nespresso? Considering:

- Gaggia Classic
- Rancillo Silvia
- Bezzera BZ13

Daily consumption is only 2 x double-shot lattes every morning. Preferably fuss-free/works well with pre-ground beans/easy to clean and can match standard café latte quality.

Separately, where is the nearest place in the North that I can get good quality beans? Alternatively, also don't mind shipping from overseas if it is more value for money.

Given that the Gaggia accepts ESE pods, is the espresso output comparable (assuming same brand, beans vs pods)?

Any budget? Fuss-free as in like nespresso?

Using pre-ground beans, imho is a big no no
Using ESE pods better alternative. ESE pods cost vs nespresso and if it’s an upgrade debatable. ESE pods is cheaper than nespresso, I think it’s half the cost

Why don’t u consider a fully automatic delonghi ESAM?

800 all in will be good. Fuss free in terms of maintenance for longevity. Not expecting push button type, but just thinking how is ese different from pre ground, other than they are sealed individually?

Wen through many forums and saw many votes for the Gaggia but never the Delonghi. Are there significant differences in output quality?
