I’ve indicated interest for HG1 coffee grinder. How long does it take for them to get back to you? Anyone has any experience? I think I’ll face a situation where espresso machine will be here before my grinder.

Best for u to email them or find a used.
Or get a niche for HKD$6000 plus shipping

These ppl do not welcome niche moving to China

they usually reply quote quickly but it could be months before stock is in. usually this is because they are making improvements to their design. EG-1 V1 to V2 to quite almost 1 year i think.

Anyway their grinders are worth the wait. Zero retention is the way to go for home brewers.

If its your first grinder i highly recommend HG-1. It will probably outlast 3 generations. nothing to spoil. huge burrs will probably not need any replacement for a home user.

83mm burrs recommendation to replace is 2000lb of coffee.
18g a day that’s like 7200 weeks
If u do 2 shots that 3600 weeks, most ppl don’t need to change in their lifetime.

I’ve decided to wait for HG1 simply because of its versatility in grinding things that are not coffee beans only.

As for the espresso machine will reveal later when my wallet is healthier. Ha.

Not too sure if you wanna grind other things other than coffee beans on the hg one.

The taste of other things will be transferred to your coffee. Not exactly a good idea

I was gifted some maple hazel nut flavoured coffee bean, big mistake using my grinder to grind.. now all my subsequent shots have a hard to get rid taste of hzel nut.

Have you tried cleaning the burrs with detergent?

Learnt a bad lesson washing my Mazzer burrs with soap .. most coffee burrs are not rust resistant, the coffee oil actually help to prevent rust. The only burrs I know which can be washed is tungsten burrs by SSP , but those cost a bomb.

By clean I don’t necessary mean wash, open and brush off the coffee that are trapped.

I washed my burr once from NS no rust issue but I do dry them well.
Chem 101, soap don’t cause rust. Sg so humid with enough water and oxygen in the air don’t need to wash iron also can rust with time

According to this they are all not stainless steel so will even rust due to high humidity

Yes soap does not cause it to rust, but the soap strips away the coffee oil protecting the burrs. It's like a cast iron pan washing with soap is usually a big no no because it strips away the protective layer unless you are quick to recoat and reseason it.

That's why it's not advisable to use water and soap on the burrs because it runs the risk of rust.

anyone has recommendations for a portable espresso maker that makes real espresso and not the stuff using a value to pressurise the coarse beans?

was looking at the flair system. but its large. not suited for back country hiking set up where you have lug it for long distances.

Not what you're looking for but your options are pretty limited. Like what James said, I think I'd rather have a nice brew than a mediocre espresso.

I am not saying a good practice is wash with soap! Lol
Just saying if u messed up and do it dry it super well.
I don’t even use detergent tablet to clean, I just use a nylon brush to remove the stale ground.

Had the minipresso but not too impressed. Seem both systems are using a pressurised valve. The body tends to be weak. I think i'll jump on the flair espresso..... been using pourover for travels but still crave for good espresso.....

Get a manual hand grinder. A commandante or Kinu M47 series (m47 traveller, phoenix or m47). Not sure about the difference for phoenix but the m47 traveller to m47 is the build material. The burr sets are the same if im not wrong. Niche zero is an awesome grinder with zero rentention. I would wanna get it some time soon
