Just came back from Taipei.

Eventhough coffee is quite new to them. they are more chinese tea inclined.
I feel their specialty coffee is slightly better or more commonly available as compared to us.

Even their Mr Cafe at all 711 or Mr Brown at Family Mart, standard is as good as or better than Starbucks. Not to say Starbucks is good. 1 cup or medium latte is 45TWD and u can get the 2nd cup at half price. So 1 cup is S$2 and 2 cups is $1.50.

At specialty shops siphon is $3.50 ( dirt cheap - Kona single origin ).
Espresso blends is like $11~. Lightly roast.

Their iced drip coffee is damn smooth also. drinking it in winter is damn song.

TW are more into drips than espressos.Even pushcarts know how to do a decent v60 filter.

I wanted to get the siphone set ( less than a hundred ) but kena ban by my wife LOL.

Singapore need to catch up ASAP.

OK just sharing my 2cts

Those that are going to TW can take a look at these websites to get a feel.

How is coarse grinding performance ?

I just tested this with a v60 this afternoon. 16g of coffee takes less 30secs to grind. Faster than a porlex... could be due to the larger burr set.

From a very unscientific experiment particle size wise its more consistent than the porlex. There are no boulders. Fines are still there but seems less than the porlex....maybe the blunt ceramic grinders of the porlex produces more fines? I used to get choking on the v60 from using the porlex due to the fines.

Less fines than the HG one too..hm...maybe large conical produces more fines? Longer grinding path..

I'm using a hario slim. When I coarse grinds it's not so consistent, if I use the sift to filter out the finds. Would it be "good enough"? Don't need to reach A+. A can already , if you know what I mean.

The feldgrind is finally here! Solid built quality and well designed. pulled a 1st shot at their recommended setting and the pour came out perfect! 18g dose for a 30g shot.

Look at the pour!

There are some cons though. Not as easy and fast to grind as the HG One. The setting is also very sensitive. The HG one is more forgiving, 1-2 notches on the setting dial hardly makes a difference to the pour rate. For the feldgrind I got a gusher just by turning the dial by 1 number from an acceptable setting. Are large conicals more forgiving? I don't think so. I think the smaller turning radius of the setting for smaller grinders makes small adjustments more exaggerated in their effect on the grind size.

Overall a value for money product for 200 bucks. Highly recommended if you don't mind the long wait and non existent customer service. Makes a good portable grinder for outdoors, camping or on the move, small and rock solid. Beats the porlex to pieces in terms of build and grind consistency. Pair this with a v60 and good beans and you are good to go!

how's this compared to the lido 2? Which would you recommend?

honestly i have not tried sifting. my guess is that too much fines can make the brew too bitter cos fines extract too quickly and also can slow down and choke filter brews making the brewing time longer than necessary for v60. so when i used the porlex the brew can sometimes taste very bitter

if you do try sieving let us know the taste difference! I suppose the cup will taste very clean.

Have not tried the Lido2 but from youtube videos the lido2 seems harder to turn. The lido2 should have more consistent build quality as parts are factory made in taiwan i think while hausgrind is more like a small cottage industry. Service and qns to the knock is also very slow to respond or they never do.

Lido 2 seems easier to load up the beans into the hopper too because of the design. For feldgrind i have to be careful not to spill the beans.

Ultimately I chose the feldgrind over lido 2 because of the size. Needed something very portable and durable. The lido 2 uses a glass catch cup that can break (upcoming lido 3 is their travel grinder and comes with plastic cup and foldable handle)

congrats on your new hoot! How many shots did you have to dial in to get that pour? And what is your redistribution method like? Any in-the-cup difference with the HG One?

Depends entirely on your needs!
Need a travel grinder? Feldgrind. The 1.5kg Lido2 isn't something you wanna carry in your backpack/luggage.
For home brews? Lido2.
Although both are very capable grinders so you can't go wrong with either one.

As for the Lido2 catch cup, although glass, its considerably thick and solid. I haven't have the guts to try but I have a feeling it won't break easily from waist-height.
Even in the event sh*t happens, the diameter and the thread is quite generic and I believe you can easily find a replacement. I've already found one in my house.
Happy new year guys!

I was lucky to get a great shot on the first grind by following the recommendation on the leaflet. The grinder is factory zeroed so 0 on the dial is a hard zero already. I tested the 2nd time to see the sensitivity of the dial by loosening it by 2 numbers and I go a gusher. So my guess is the usable setting for espresso is within 5 numbers.

Honestly I can't comment the difference in taste between it and the large conical HG One yet cos I am using a new blend I'm not familiar with. But shots from both when dialed in properly was tasty with the HG One being more creamy and the feldgrind being more fruity but hey that can be all just in my head.

I just pour the grinds into the filter and wdt to distribute evenly.

You are right in the end I chose the feldgrind due to the size for travel.. I may get a lido 2 or 3 for office.

Happy new year guys and drink more coffee.

upgraded from the skerton to the lido 2 about a month ago.

grinding wise, its a lot faster due to the aggressive burrs. (I grind for espresso; used to take about > 200 turns on the skerton, but only about 60-70 turns for the lido 2). Consistency is visibly better. I switched to a new coffee around the time I got the lido, so I can't comment if there were taste differences. Considered the pharos instead, but decided against it since I brew with an aeropress occasionally, and after watching a video on the pharos, decided that getting the coffee out of the grinder was too much of a pain).

But it does take an insane amount of strength to grind light roasts using the lido 2, due to the aggressive burrs (usually I have to sit down and clamp it against the thigh to do it). For medium roasts, no issues just holding it still with one hand while grinding with the other.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

you should look at using a forwarder. I bought a couple of things from orphanespresso along with the lido, paid about 12 usd shipping from them to the forwarder, and 22 usd from my forwarder to me.

Does anybody know if the aeropress makes espresso or regular drip coffee akin to the french press for example?

Not strong like espresso and weak like regular drip coffee.

This article is good, it's more like drip coffee just stronger. Something closer to espresso will be moka pot but note it's still not espresso
