consider lido2/3, hausgrind (beware of super slow delivery and non-existent customer service, awesome product otherwise),

not that expensive but more consistency in the grinds. will make a more consistent espresso and easier to dial in. Hario slim very hard to dial in for espresso. the steps between the settings are too wide.

Hi guys! I have a question here. Just found this thread hidden with pros.

Was thinking to upgrade my Hario slim to get a better cup for pourover.
My budget is around $200. At 1st, I was looking at baratza encore for better grind and convenience of electric grinder then I realized lido2 was in my budget and I have been reading review of how good the grind was.

I know bros here own some of the very nice hand grinder.
So was wandering if you guys could give some advice!

Thanks!:D

lido 2 would be a nice upgrade from a hario, especially for pourover. I pretty much went the same route.

Thanks all for the replies.
I am not in the rush. Just not sure if I want to go the hand grind or electric route.

If you're only grinding for 1 or 2 cups at a go, I guess a hand grinder will suffice.

Sometime, in morning you will abit lazy to grind haha!:s13:
But I willing to put in some elbow grease if i can get a good cup.
My hario is really abit meh.

I think k30 does have clumping issues although I think there was a newer version of k30 with lesser clumping. The upcoming Mahlkonig Peak is supposed to fix that.
Also, check out Tim Wendelboe's new videos on espresso, brewing and roasting on youtube. Tim Wendelboe's videos

Thanks for sharing, just finished watching all 3. Very interesting and informative.

I've always been a strong advocate of not warming your espresso cups. Mine are always at room temperature. But I've never thought of using bigger cups...interesting. When using my small espresso cups, I would find it quite difficult to swirl my shot, most times I would use a teaspoon to stir twice b4 drinking. I will try using my cappuccino cup from now on.

Towards the end of the 'espresso Q&A', he's got some tips for newbies starting out and share some of his views on equipment choices.

hi guys, is it normal if my rancilio silvia takes about 30-40 seconds after turning on the brew button before espresso starts dripping out of the spout before it starts to turn into a stream?

Im brewing with a brew ratio of 1:2 and brew time is around 35 seconds.

So total brew time is about a minute plus for one cup or am i doing something wrong?

Not burnt and super bitter? Sounds over extracted?

1 minute plus brew time is definitely over extracted. We count brew time from when you "press the button" and usually it takes between 25 to 35 seconds. I'll highly recommend that you read H-B's guides or watch their videos if you have the time.

not really though. tastes alright but the flow of espresso from the spout isn't that strong in colour still even though its supposed to be over extracting

oh. But if I make the grinds finer the espresso would gush out and it would be really weak. Could it be something wrong with the espresso machine or would it more likely be preparation mistakes?

Unlikely its any problem with the espresso machine but you might want to check the HB forums on how to adjust the opv to get the correct pressure. If you don't have a pressure gauge portafilter or a scace, you could use the back flush method. This is quite leh cheh and pretty much an estimate. Need to measure how much water is ejected back into the bypass return hose in a set period of time to estimate the pressure.

what grinder do you use? its unusual a finer grind makes the espresso gush out.

May I suggest these parameters as a starting point.

1. Use stock baskets. VSTs need a bit more skill and grinder with micro adjustment.
2. bottomless portafilter if possible to rule prep errors.
3. 15g of coffee in the stock basket. (really need to measure accurately). Weight the filter basket and tare the scale. Use a 0.1g scale.
4. Use a espresso style roast. Light roasts can be funky and not easy to pull. liberty, strangers reunion, dutch colony, highlander, toby, bettr barista espresso blends are ok. I find traditional espresso roasts pull well with lower doses. Light roasted stuff generally needs higher doses on vst baskets. Counter intuitive...i know...
5. since silvia has no preinfusion, the shot should take 30 secs +- 5 secs, from the time you press the switch to the time you off the switch. 14g of coffee should get u a 28g shot for a normale or if you prefer a ristresso aim for a 21g shot.

6. for e61 i usually go for 35 secs. for cremina i go for 40 secs with light roasts and long preinfusion.

good luck!

I used to own the bb005 and I liked it, only troublesome thing for me was adjusting the grind at first, need to turn and turn the knob. No idea about the preciso but I think I read somewhere on HB that bb005 is comparable to the vario?
If you do decide to get the bezzera, pm me and I'll try to find you the scale I used to paste on the grinder (helped me with remembering grind settings).

That sounds weird. When you grind finer, flow is suppose to go slower. It sounds more like channeling to me. Is your tamp level? Are there any holes in your puck after extraction? It might help if you have a naked portafilter to diagnose the problem. Also, try to change only one variable at a time to adjust taste, eg. dose, grind size.
